yeah we had the same problems, we had to go around about 100 machines, and change the settings so that the front ports would play sound!
Does anybody have issues with these sound cards? They are giving us problems on our newest computers. They have too many options!
We have front audio ports (as well as the rear). All we want is for the kids to plug mic in the front and then record in audacity. Simple? Yes on the older computers with the realtek ac 97 cards.
We have to click so many options just to get it to work on the Realtek HD ones! Such as unticking enable front audio detection, having to change the input in audacity as it defaults to the digital not analogue inputs to name but a few annoyances.

is the not a jumper setting on the board? or does it all have to be done software now?
There was no jumper for us, theres a little speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner, you have to go in there and enable the front ports.
We could have saved so much time if he had enabled it before sending an image of our machine to be put on a new order of computers!
I've got a reg fragment that runs on machine startup that will import the "Disable front input detection" setting.
Let me know if any of you guys want it (I agree, it was a total pain in the arse!)
Matt
Yep they are turd. Worst soundcard ive used since before the soundblasters
Zip file attached guys.
Contains the .reg fragment and .vbs file to run at startup/logon

Never had a problem with this sound card.....
First thing I do on new pc's is remove the realtek audio control panel, its just bloatware.
Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000
MS Support KB888111
Fix:-
Add/Remove Programes - remove all RealTek software.
Reboot into Windows Safe Mode
Hardware Device Manager - Legacy Audio Drivers - Properties remove HD audio devices.
System Devices - remove Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio
Reboot into Normal Windows
DO NOT run any new hardware wizards
install MS KB888111
install RealTek audio drivers
Reboot
Sound should now be working
Run any remaining New Hardware Wizards
Sorry to ressurrect this, but I have the exact same problem as the original poster.
I am trying to record to Audacity via the front mic input on some viglen desktops, however this doesn't work unless a user with admin rights changes the record source in the Realtek control panel software from 'rear mic' to 'front mic'. Obviously I need a way to do this programatically rather than changing it manually on 150 machines.
I have tried using process monitor to capture what is being changed, but I can't really make sense of the output, and exporting then importing the entirety of the relevant key doesn't seem to work.
The registry key already posted by matt disables the front panel detection which takes care of one problem, but the record source settings seem to be stored somewhere else entirely.
