Today I was asked to go to a group of PCs that had been locked out by the BIOS password being changed from setup to always. All of our PCs have a BIOS password so no pupil should have been able to access the BIOS. Is anyone aware of a back door way into BIOS?
Needless to say if they have got the BIOS password there are approx 600 PCs that need to have it changed!
I don't want to do that unless forced

There is sometimes a jumper on the motherboard specificially for the password settings. Otherwise you could flip the battery out and drain the power.

It's possible to reset or blank the BIOS password by:
- physically pulling the battery out or setting a motherboard jumper
- using software such as cmospwd.
- using a backdoor password

Are these Dell PCs? On like the Dell GX520s you have to lock the password as well as setting the System password. If you forget they can get in and set the setup password.

Just another thought, we have some PC's with a BIOS that allows you to set it to view only for users.

My guess, if they are older pcs, is that the bios battery is flat, so the password was wiped over xmas when the PC was shut down for an extended period. It took a while for someone to notice and they poked around and locked the bios.

Torture is a possibility! is it legal?
Doubt that the bios battery has gone flat as PCs were Ok the previous day... have tried the various backdoor offerings and none of them worked.
They are Tulips and don't appear to have an option to lock password.
Once again Thanks for your help we are now sitting with crossed fingers waiting for it to happen again and then the torture will begin
