i am currently at work and have just discovered that a load of machines are only seeing one of their two cores under XP but if i leave the preinstalled vista on then it picks up two
they are dell optiplex 320's with E4300 procs.
intel recognition software says second core is disabled
please help
Was it a fresh install of xp or a ghost/RIS image?
it was a ghost image of xp using the UIU software which removes all the hardware specific stiff so that i can apply it onto any machine
Which HAL is it using?
i dont know, i thought that each machine has its own hal that is created during windows set up. i guess they are using that one??
This KB article outlines the different HAL options.

ok, i get the vaious types now. how do i find out which one i am using. are you thinking down the lines of the hal was created on sinigle core and dispite the UIU software outlined in an eariler post it cant deal with going over to dual core?
i have just checked the Device manager on the original image creating machine and it says "ACPI multiprocessor PC" under the computer tab
