Well, that's one use. Won't need to use a computer for that then

Haha love this post You can't be seriously suggesting that that you'd happily replace all computers with iPads in your work place? I hope for your sake this was all sarcasm

We are letting our staff have a choice in their device. Much like the students do - they can use whatever they feel comfortable with

Yep which is what we do, Ubuntu, Mac, Windows, iPad, Android. We wouldn't just suddenly tell all staff and students we have got rid of everything and now they have to use iPads for everything whether they like it or not.

What on earth are they thinking, an iPad is not there to replace a computer in anyway shape or form, it's a frigging 500 internet browser for gods sake! What about Sims? Shared Areas? What happens when they're three years old and Apple no longer support them and you have to buy another 2000!! iPads or any tablet for that matter can't replace a computer the only thing that even comes close is a Microsoft Surface Pro but even then staff will winge as it's screen is only 10".

I've never heard such a ridiculous sentence in all my life, I would not like to be you when it all goes tits up! Have you even tested 1 iPad yet and if so have you made sure MDM is working, WiFi is fast enough... ugh I could go on. What a stupid thing for your management to decide and I'm sorry but I'd be up in arms about this. They've agreed to a huge (wrongly made) decision without even asking for your input, I'd feel like an idiot and be furious!!!!

    [STOPRANT/CALMING]
Well exactly. I have nothing more to add.

... well, I do but I can't really say it here. Oh - go on then

The trouble is they've probably got a price from a sales person and now think that's it. We WILL need to upgrade our entire wireless (c 120k for us), we WILL need to get extra internet bandwidth (we currently have 100MB) but we'd also need to have it piped in via a different route for redundancy as it can't be down at all with 'cloud' files etc, we WILL need to find a cloud solution that meets all the relevant legal requirements, we WILL need to find a solution for our MIS which we don't have a web interface for, we WILL have to find a solution to projecting from them ... there are many more 'we wills' but ....

I don't wish to sound negative to the idea because I think the principle is good. It's the practicalities that make it unworkable currently. Trouble is that no one has thought past the shiny side of things and I'm the one looking pessimistic because all I can put forward are cost implications and issues.

I work with a large number of schools throughout the UK, implementing Tablets into schools. Have you ever thought of a Tablet Devices Scheme??

This is a massively popular scheme with schools as the cost of the hardware is not down to them, they can spend all important budget on other things!

Would it maybe worth me popping out and having a chat with you, we are not trying to sell you anything

Most schools will look at this to implement one to one learning, without having budget restraints.

Let me know I can come out and go through it

    Thanks

I suggest decent Windows based hardware (i5 min if you can afford it) or iPads for all but backed up with a great virtual remote apps system if you need SIMS or some windows software.
