    Dell Dimension C521 And Mandrake

I have installed Mandriva on a Dell Dimension C521 at home everthing ahs gone well, except for sound. I cannot get the system to play any media at all. I am currently in the process of updating the system again, although I don't hold out much hope. I am VERY new to Linux and I wondered if anyone out there would be able to point me in the right direction so that I can complete the install of the new operating system.

Here is what I have in the system [soundcard wise]

    Identification: Vendor: ‎nVidia Corporation
    Description: ‎MCP51 High Definition Audio
    Media class: ‎Audio device
    Connection: Bus: ‎PCI
    PCI domain: ‎0
    Bus PCI #: ‎0
    PCI device #: ‎16
    PCI function #: ‎1
    Vendor ID: ‎0x10de
    Device ID: ‎0x026c
    Sub vendor ID: ‎0x1028
    Sub device ID: ‎0x01f4
    Driver: Module: ‎snd_hda_intel
    Alternative drivers: ‎unknown

That comes from the hardware section of the 'Device Manager' equivalent in Mandriva.

The station is dual booting and Vista is still able to play system sounds etc. so it is not a hardware issue.

    Any ideas anyone?

You've tried searching nVidia's website/Google for an updated driver?

I have tried Google, but not the nVidia site. That will be my first task when I get home tonight.

    Thank you.

I suppose I should have thought of that myself, but when Google did not find it...

OK. Solved it! Sound is working beautifully.

It wasn't so much that sound wasn't playing, just that it was EXTREMLEY quiet and I didn't notice it with the background noise here. When I turned the speakers way up I started to get feedback, as if the speakers were acting as microphone inputs. Swapping the microphone feeds over [left to right and right to left if you get what I mean] and turning the volume down to normal levels sorted it. It threw me that I didn't have the feedback/howlaround problem when running exactly the same set-up under Windows so I had assumed that the configuration was correct.

I am starting to really like Linux. Now all I have to do is get used to all the differences [commands, applications, look and feel,...]
