Have run hyper V on Dell poweredge servers for a few years with no problem.
    Get plenty of RAM.
If you get MS Server 2012 datacenter edition you are licensed to run an unlimited number of virtual servers.

+1 for this. 6 hosts which are r720s, with two md3200s as the hyperv storage

@fairm010 i am looking to virtualize our setup too but unsure of what to choose, hyper-v or vmware. I understand the cost benefits are a plus for hyper-v but what other factors made you decide on hyper-v? Also, what are you using for your SAN?

The main thing was staying in the windows environment. Easy to manage, maintain etc.

Also, im a complete noob here but planning to use local hosts storage.

Yep fan of Dell servers here too. T710 are the newest I have and they're awesome. Not tried the latest gen.

Would also be willing to buy HP as they have good rep too.

As for VMware V HyperV - I've stuck to VMWare as it is just SOOOO reliable and easy to use. I would like to try HyperV out in anger tho - maybe something for the future.
