    Dodgy tape drive?

    BIRTHDAY POST!!! =]

    ... and back to reality.

So I can't do anything with any tapes. Any backup job, erase job, inventory job etc, once the tape is loaded, comes back with a CRC error on the tape. I very much doubt something's happened to all 23 tapes and I've run a cleaning tape through it several times, so I'm guessing we have a dodgy tape drive in our autoloader... or could it just be the cable between the autoloader and the backup server???

Have you tried running a cleaning tape through it?

Well, if I load the cleaning tape into the drive the autoloader reports status "cleaning" for a couple of minutes and there doesn't seem to be any other routine to do it, so I'm guessing that's it. Also possible that's our original cleaning tape from five years ago though so I'm not sure if it's just dodgy too...

That's quite old for any tape. A lot of manufacturers expect all tapes to be replaced every 6 months in a Grandfather-Father-Son backup regime, obviously with the daily tapes being replaced more often than the weekly or monthly ones.

Have you got a new tape you can try running through it?

Unfortunately not, I'll have to order one and see if that improves things. Just wondered if the CRC error could be to do with anything else like drivers before I did that. The backup software used is Veeam V7.

    Update the drive firmware,

If you can turn of drive level CRC to test ( will probably need to verify the tape after backup)

One of our autoloaders currently has a stuck tape, disputing the waranty on that at the moment..

Our other one failed the robot 4 days before it's warranty ran out and got a complete refurb unit from dell.
