Upgrading my 5 yo Dell Precision 490! (TO the MAX)

Well, thanks to ebay I can now take My workstation to its potential MAX.. for just 58! This is a little sad but I love the idea of maxing out a PC. if it was only 2008

I've upgraded from a single socket Xeon Dual core running at 1.86Ghz to a pair of Xeon Dual Cores running at 3Ghz! I already have 16GB of ECC DDR2.

    Before: before.png

    After: after.png

    The upgrade kit: IMG_0052.JPG

    Before install: IMG_0053.JPG

Obvious CPU speed boost after but also the memory performance has gone up.. All I need now is a SSD!

I had to get a cheque made out to the guy, as ebay PP won't accept the schools company CC

Nope, this is some super old legacy naming convention that I've stuck with. I think ZAK stood for Zero.Administration.aKount? My first workstation many years ago was zak-box1 given to me by my old boss.

Nice! It's a shame about the DDRII (speed wise) but if you can whack a SATA 3 card and decent SSD in there you will get years of nice service out of that. Just goes to show that you don't have to spend a lot to get a whole new lease of life out of some computers.

The Dell 490's are rather nice. Only room for two Hdds though which is a shame. They will however take a pair of quad core 53xx series xeons so you've got room for even more upgrades in the future

@ICTDirect_Dave That's a no on the quad core You have to have bought a quad core in the first place to get the quad core capable Moboard in these beasts!
@Dos_Box it does have quad channel memory which helps...(that's why it has 8 mem modules!)

KSP is running better than ever now
