    Manage Surface RT Devices

    To those who have purchased Surface RT Tablets recently following the MS sell-off.

    How are you setting your devices up? Are you mapping drives and printers? Are you removing any apps, tiles etc?

    Just received some of these and looking to set them up but not sure of the best way to integrate them in out environment.

    Just wondering what others are doing?

    i have a script that maps drives based on user name but i dont have any in my schools (other people where i work do and i borrowed one to get the script working as vbs is crippled had to restore to batch files :shudder:

    i dont think on 8 they are designed to be intergrated 8.1 and sccvm iirc has some cool features for them but sccvm needs a server to itself (realistically it on testing slowed down my i7 laptop and that was with 1 client) which as most of my schools only have 1 server is quite an outlay for some "cheap" tablets

    Would intune be the solution?

    @jstuttard - Dont really want to spend anymore on these so intune is out.
    @sted - When mapping drives how are credentials passed over? Not members of the domain so must need credentials for mapped drives.

    heres my script its faily simple if messy just alter to fit and imo best as a scheduled task that way if john leaves it logged on 30 mins later the first lines disconnect the drives

    the usernames in my school all start with a number denoting year of entry so from that it can be worked out where a users home dir is and ive made the assumption that if its a non numeric 1st character its a member of staff. AS said its not elegant but works. Users get prompted to enter their username and then later on their password (which is never visible or stored in the script) then it does some "calculations" on who you are and mapps u: home drive v: everyones home drives (if you're a staff member) and resources. Theres also various remmed out bits that were from testing ive left in incase they are needed at a later date so mainly things like echo %mapu% so i can see if the codes wrong or the maths although now i look at it again i appear to of removed mapu anyway lol just left the echos

    Code:
    echo off
    rem mapdrive prompt v3 20-09-13
    net use r: /delete
    net use u: /delete
    net use v: /delete

    set /p str=Enter Username:
    rem echo %str%
    set str2=%str:~0,1%
    rem echo %str2%
    rem echo %stra%
    rem decide what year group by first character
    if  %str2%==1 goto equals1
    if  %str2%==2 goto equals2
    if  %str2%==3 goto equals3
    if  %str2%==4 goto equals4
    if  %str2%==5 goto equals5
    if  %str2%==6 goto equals6
    if  %str2%==7 goto equals7
    if  %str2%==8 goto equals8
    if  %str2%==9 goto equals9
    if  %str2%==0 goto equals0

    rem echo not 0-9 so presumably staff

    net use u: \\server\users$\staff\%str% /user:%str% *
    net use r: \\server\resources$
    net use v: \\server\users$

    rem echo %mapu%

    @sted You are the man! Against my advice we have bought a load of the RTs, and I was scratching my head as to how to map drives for pupils via a batch file - you just made these things a whole lot more useful now!

    Shame we don't have intune to manage them though.....

    Sted, our student users usernames are 2 digits before the actual name for example 12woodj, 07nunnm

    How do I modify the script so it decides the year group by the first 2 characters rather than just 1.

    Any help appreciated.

    change
    set str2=%str:~0,1%
    to
    set str2=%str:~0,2%

    should work iirc but when testing id put an echo str2 in so you can see what its pulled out
