Mad, got it all up and running, getting no where building a VM. Copied the ISO over the to datastore, does not want to know, tried to get it to see the ISO on my laptop - does not want to know. Can't get it to boot from the local USB DVD drive plugged into the HOST either. Mad.

I'm fairly sure you will struggle with passing through a USB cd drive to the VM.

Have you set it to be connected on boot?

Ignore - having a bit of mad moment...... [ needed to select the boot menu on the VM to point to CD drive which in turn was then pointing to the ISO I uploaded earlier..... ]

Ah - not since they killed ESX.

You'll actually be looking for vmware vsphere hypervisor for the free one: Free VMware vSphere Hypervisor, Free Virtualization (ESXi)

You're also limited to 8vCPU per VM and 32GB of RAM per Host

Yup - You would need a license if you require VCenter (the server instance which manages multiple hosts). But a standalone ESXI is free

Apparently when you go to the above page and login - the 'licence and config' tab should give you your key for free usage (after you agree to the EULA)

Bloody stupid, I went to DL it again and in generated one which when I entered it I get the:

Product: VMware vSphere 5 Hypervisor Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU)
    License Key: XXX
    Expires: Never

    Product Features:
Up to 32 GB of memory
    Up to 8-way virtual SMP

Which is fine - wasted an hour going around in bloody circles. Anyhoo - got a 2003 and 2008 server on it working well.

Anyway it's running really well of the USB stick - no complaints.
