What would you do - Raid configuration

    Hi all,

Over the summer we are replacing our CCTV server (can't really put it on to the virtual environment due to the running demands and storage demands of the machine) so we have just bought a server.
We have 2x 500GB SATA drives mirrored for the OS and for the data we have 10x SAS 4TB 6gbps drives. What RAID configuration would you put the data drives in? We need redundancy so we do not want a RAID0 but do not want to lose recordings if a drive fails - so what would you do?

    Thanks, eddyc

I'd do a mirror with a hot spare - you'd be able to record for months!

What does the storage controller support? RAID-6 would probably be a good option, it could withstand two failed drives and keep going...

    RAID10.

    RAID 10
In RAID 10, often referred to as RAID 1+0 (mirroring and striping), data is written in stripes across primary disks that have been mirrored to the secondary disks

Given the number of drives, I'd go for RAID-10 with a couple of hot spares. 16Tb, speed, redundancy and fail over.

The server is a DELL PowerEdge R720XD with a PERC H710p RAID Controller 1gb cache

    With RAID 6 you'd get 32TB useable...

But slower write speeds. And since it's for CCTV video, I'd go less space more speed on this one.
