Re: Widescreen TFTs - good or bad?

I dont see much benefit even for my personal use, Im quite happy to stick to 4:3. I want widescreen in a TV but for a monitor 4:3 is fine

Would much prefer not to use them in classrooms. Thankfully all the 150 odd PC's we bought (Dell's) over the summer have 4:3 screens

Re: Widescreen TFTs - good or bad?

I've just got Hardglass 19" Widescreen TFTs from PCWorld business for the very good price of £109. Thats the good news.

    Now for the two gotchas:

    1) Like an idot i did'nt think about the aspect ratio difference for IWB's because we split the signal to the whiteboards and the monitors.

    2) Dell Optiplex PC's don't have 1440x900 as a native resolution. GRRRRRR!
and as it's the intel Chipset i guess that would apply to many other brands

I think that Smart have just brought out a widescreen Smartboard, presumably for the very reason that most laptops are now widescreen.

Caught us out that one. Well we knew it was going to happen but it was unavoidable. So the teachers now have the option of crap display on the TFT, or crap on the projector.

The PC should pick up the resoloutions the monitor supports once it boots up with the monitor attatched. At least all of mine do that. Worst comes to the worst you can force it to see the resoloutions of the monitor by using the monitor driver on CD.

Usually only requires a vbios update and/or driver update.

I think what Dan is driving at is you will end up paying a premium for a legacy 4:3 monitor, would you pay the premium or bite the bullet and adopt (with all the headaches it may bring)?

At home I have a 20" widescreen 1680 x 1050 so its like having a 17" with extra width and I most certainly wouldn't go back, it also has 1:1 pixel mapping so I can run at 1280x1024 at 4:3.

I wouldnt manage with widescreens in most classrooms, the extra few "'s of deskspace is a no go, 19" TFTs touch edge to edge in some areas already!

What software have you had trouble using with 16:9 ratio?

Some really old CAD software that Techology uses called 'ProDesktop'. Some assessment software used in the LRC called 'Accelerated Reader'.

Additionally, really bad things happen with Sims.net if you switch the font DPI to 120 (required for larger resolution monitors).

ProDesktop is still being made Geoff!

As for the topic, I like Widescreen's but wouldn't use them in school, also don't see a need for anything bigger than a 17" 4:3.

At home I don't even want to get rid of my CRT it's so much nicer colours.

Re: Widescreen TFTs - good or bad?

I have to say I hate widescreen monitors because I tend to work more in the vertical than the horizontal (less snickering in back!).

Granted at home I finally splashed out on a widescreen 22" LG TFT and it's center stage between two 17" TFT's but given that I do a lot of webcode it's actually useful for stuff like dreamweaver, topstyle, photoshop, etc.. side menus.

From a school point of view though it results in more scrolling, makes it harder for proper setting of the projector and screen to a common resolution on classroom machines... and more focused on primary school applications it's a total waste of time... it's dead space that just isn't utilised.

... ultimately though I come back to one point, WTF is the point? I mean widescreen is for displaying widescreen telly, not computer programs... unless you go up to 20"+ for resolutions of 1680 x 1050 the screen gets cramped and you have random space out to the side for random useless stuff like MSN or the Vista sidebar (which is just another outsize taskbar IMHO).

So, I guess you could say I don't like 'em much
