Laptop not charging (Dell Vostro 3500)

I recently bought a Dell Vostro 3500, but when the PSU is plugged in it just says "plugged in, not charging". I bought a new battery for it and the problem remains. I also tried to reinstall windows but no luck there either. I have noticed that the PSU is third party and not an original Del charger, i'm not sure that would make a difference? I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help
    Great looking website here too!

One thing to check is that Charging is enabled in the BIOS. Some Dell laptops allow the ability to charge batteries to be disabled.

I will check this in the bios thanks it does have that option using the function keys but doesn't seem to work, might be a Dell driver to make it work? Thanks for the fast reply.

I re enabled ac adaptor warning, and...got a warning on boot "AC adaptor can not be determined. Battery may not charge". I guess I need an official Dell charger!

If you look in the bios it will tell you the AC adapter type.

if it's blank, unknown, etc... then there are 3 possible issues.

    1) the ac adapter is not signaling the PSU type due to a fault.
    2) the ac adapter is just not designed to signal
    3) the signaling pin on the input jack on the laptop is damaged.

3- is quite a common fault. only way to be sure is to get a known working original/copy PSU

It'll be the charger - seen this with quite a few models but basically the PSU cannot provide sufficient current to power the laptop and charge it - eg the laptop may need 4.5A but it has a 3.5A PSU, or the PSU is worn out.
