    Bloody HP Deskjet 1220C!

I have 2 of these in the the graphics department. They are hanging off JetDirect 170x print servers and the queue is on a Win2K3 box - clients access using Win2K3 (Citrix).

This problem started just a couple of days ago and basically you cannot print - the most that comes out from a Windows test page is the first two lines.

    Any ideas?

Tried resetting the JetDirect to its defaults? Or upgrading to the newest firmware?

Do the printers work when connected locally to a machine?

restart the spooler service on the server too. Check the spooler spool folder's not full of junk.

    Re: Bloody HP Deskjet 1220C!

We have one of these in CDT shared on a 170X HP print server box. Our Print Server is W2K with XP Pro SP2 Clients.
We find that from time to time it is necessary to restart the Print Spooler on the print server because the printer just stops and will not print anything. We think that it is down to the software being used in that area. The culprit might be a package called "2D Design" as most of the problems occur when kids print from that package.
We have tried downloading and installing the latest drivers from HP which has seemed to reduce the occurrence a bit.
We have another 1220C in our reprographics room and have never had any problems with it at all.

    Re: Bloody HP Deskjet 1220C!

Just a word of warning for anyone contemplating buying a HP deskjet 1220C or it's modern equivalent the 1280. If you are thinking that they will print on card, FORGET IT.

We have a HP DJ1220 which will not print on card, and an Epson stylus colour 1290 (also A3) which quite happily print on card. The techie dept wanted to buy some more printers which they planned for printing on card. I warned them not to buy the HP. The reply? "Oh it will be ok, it says it will print on 260gsm so it will be ok and besides, its not the 1220 but the 1280 we are buying"

Of course, they bought two and both of them came to a grinding halt when they tried to feed them with card.

Then they bought an Epson 1290C and it worked fine.

@mark_wood: Don't you have to feed the card from the back, one sheet at a time?

@secman: I've just restarted the print spooler and one of them has come alive (i'm assuming that the other one has got unplugged or something). You may be right about 2DDesign since it is our Graphics department that as these.

I intend to replace them anyway with proper printers - HP Office Jet Pro K850dn. As well as being from the better business range of printers these have the added advantage of looking well cool - they are black and silver! They do cost around £300 though

Just been on www.experts-exchange.com and found this:

It is almost certainly a printer driver that is causing this. Notorious problem.
The rule of thumb is to use Windows native drivers (ie supplied with Windows) where ever possible. The problem is identifiying which driver it is.
You may have to remove them all and then replace them one by one with built in drivers to see which one it is - or do some testing in a controlled environment to try and narrow it down.

Don't know if it applies, but could be the culprit.

    Re: Bloody HP Deskjet 1220C!

I have come across this sort of problem before. There seems to be some driver issue that happens on the print server that then break all further jobs. I'm pretty sure there is always an HP inkjet around when it happens.

You can also test by connecting a machine to the ip port of the jetdirect, bypassing the windows server. This might rule out printer and jetdirect next time.

You can add my name to the list of engineers that have spent a significant amount of time in the past battling with the 1220C on Jetdirect boxes... And the culprit was? Drivers! :?
