    Panasonic Toughbook? Tadpole?
Ex-BT bright yellow toughbook from ebay?

Are we talking "casually toss on bed" or "throw across room with tiled floor?" Because there's about a £1,000 price difference.

For the latter: rugged computers | rugged notebooks | military laptops | Getac | General Dynamics Itronix | Panasonic Toughbook | Xplore

More seriously, if one has to be provided then whoever is making the demand will have to suck it up and pay for a ruggedized machine (there are some "building site" type ones that may not be as ridiculously expensive as military spec machines).

I have also seen an Android tablet due out soon aimed at the construction industry.

We have RM minibooks for things like this. There were sold as "almost indestructable" but I haven't been allowed to test that claim.

From what I can see, it's based on an Asus Eee PC 701.

If you're looking for fullsized laptops, I can't help, sorry.

Older Panasonic ToughBooks come in at reasonable prices. Bought one recently for our Grounds that was about £400. Still running on XP, but performance is just fine. To be honest, if you don't want to compromise on performance, then there is very little in the price range (that a normal school would consider justifiable), that will survive many attempts at willful destruction like this...

Also just make sure there's an SSD in it. They're often cheaper than hard drives assuming you don't need the capacity. 128gb for £45 standard.

forget about a laptop, and get what we got for a special school when I worked in a previous job which was to get a hardened public console PC with a stainless keyboard and trackball. Still there, still working!

Think about it differently - a notebook screwed down to a table.

The Dell Latitude E6430 ATG is pretty tough, but you're looking at over a grand to buy one. Honestly not sure you'll find anything that isn't nailed down that will withstand a proper chuck though, plus the tougher it is the more it will hurt the person it's thrown at.
