EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
Right. I think its time to lay down some rules about the code and development which is going to go on here. I have been receiving some mail recently from members unhappy with the way some previously posted code has been taken and used. I will now make things perfectly clear for all users.
1. Any code posted on this site originating from forum members will be treated as open source, including any future modifications thereof unless the member posting the original code has stated otherwise when originally posting it.
2. No fees will be charged for any work undertaken by and for EduGeek. We may ask for a PayPal donation which will go towards hosting and site running costs but we all work in education and need all of the help we can get, and the freer the better.
3. Any completed application development will remain under the control and stewardship of EduGeek and mirrored as requested.
4. These rules may change as situations dictate.
I hope these rules are clear as I do not want people to begin profiteering from our combined work. We are all in this together and anyone who does not want to give their time and skills freely need not apply.

I think legally anything posted here is automatically public domain so there isn't anything stopping people ripping stuff off. People should be sticking copyright notices on things they post and indicating what license they want it distributed under. I'd recommend people think about using the Creative Commons License for scripts and documentation. For actual software it depends if you want to open source it or not. Personally I'd like so see everything open sourced and under the GPL but I expect some people will have problems with that.
Re: EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
It is one thing for people to post about a little app they have created from scratch, but another to take some previously posted code, modify it, and then claim ownership of the app.
People are not happy with this.
Re: EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
Dos_Box,
I agree with what yuou say but if you place code up online, open for all to see you are in effect saying "Use it".
I f someone then takes that code and modifies it to fit thier particular purpose then that is fair game, remember not every script or code snippet is going to fit everyones needs.
However if a sxript or code snippt is posted and the auther has expressly said that it can only be used in it's original form that is a different matter, with that in mind we are all here to help one and other and if someone has a problem with other people using and / or amending a script / code snippet then maybe they should think twice before posting it.
I my self have no problem with anyone using code that I post, if it helps them go get it......
Re: EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
The point I need to make is that any code obtained from this site and modified should be re-posted for the benefit af all. Any code posted should be treated as coming under the GPL licence.
Re: EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
The GPL requires all copies of software to carry an appropriate copyright notice. The GPL requires all copies of software to include a copy of the GPL. You can't just say "oh everything here is covered under the GPL". You have to do it properly.
The GPL isn't really suitable for documentation (or to my mind scripts) either. Like I mentioned, look at the Creative Commons license.
Re: EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
As always been said any code devloped as group effort will be open source by way not forgot just been busy with work..

Re: EduGeek projects rules and boundaries.
Also you will find that the GPL licence requires that all software that uses any source code under the GPL licence must be given away free under the GPL licence.
So in general if you use any code that has been sourced from GPL and add it to a project that you have done and wish to profit from it, even donations, then you can't.
