    Why are you doing a project on something you know nothing about?

    If it's that you've been told to do it but don't know what it is, Google some existing inventory software, see how it works, what's required. Talk to someone in your school who's likely to use it, see what they have to record, what features they'd find useful etc.

    It was always done on a spreadsheet here, with labels printed ourselves, but has never been ideal for various reasons...

    We're just trialling School Asset Manager at the moment, after looking into a few options to cover everything needed, we finally decided to invest in a proper solution with support...

    It's a lot cheaper than it used to be, and is really easy to set up and use...

    There are various tools to scan the network for anything with an IP address, we also use Spiceworks as a helpdesk system, that does have an inventry system built in and won't cost you anything, but not quite user friendly enough for an Asset Manager Solution...

    In that case, W3Schools is going to be your friend: PHP 5 Tutorial

    Work through those, then move on to more in-depth tutorials, you'll know what you're looking for by the time you've worked through that little lot.

    +1 for W3Schools, also the PHP Site and Stackoverflow work wonders for overcoming specific issues.

    Can I just throw in a spanner in the works?

    W3Fools

    I hate w3schools with passion. Everything you need for PHP and MYSQLI (Not MYSQL as that is old and outdated and shouldn't be used) is in the php documentation here:

    PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor

    using a mysql table etc:

    PHP: mysqli_result::fetch_fields - Manual

    Also use these:

    Stack Overflow
    Create html table and populate with records from databse in php | DaniWeb

    That last link should be really helpful as I pretty much give you the tools
