    W3Fools

    I hate w3schools with passion.
Why? You're probably the first person I've ever heard of with that opinion. Sure, they might not go in to great detail on anything, but they provide you with a solid grounding to advance from.

That last link should be really helpful as I pretty much give you the tools
The problem with relying on forums is knowing where to start, knowing when you're looking at something relevant, hoping the answer is enough for you to truly understand what you're doing as opposed to copy pasting and knowing when what you're reading is BS. Not a great place to go and learn IMO, but very good for getting help with specific problems once you have an idea what you're doing.

w3 doesn't really explain anything they do, they don't explain the functionality and why 'this' method is better than another etc.

PHP used to use MYSQL as their extension and now it is MySQLi. The database may still be MySQL but the OP will need to use MySQLi to connect to it for security reasons and whatnot.

The problem with relying on w3 is it isn't part of the php site and therefore is just as opinionated as a forum. Using forums and refering to the php website is a great way to learn each segment, I didn't say to copy and paste, as you can do that from W3. Heck, when I was learning I copy pasted from w3 but learnt from forums.
Also Forums can be great for learning:
