    Selling on ebay

    have any schools got their own ebay account set up? we have a load of old toners and inks the school don't just want to throw away and I was wondering if the school had to register as a charity or business with e-bay to do this.

    any advice?

    @ittech:

    Wish it was as easy as that, the problem is that your school like most schools do not pay VAT and herein lies the problem as you could expect. What you would have to do is practically give them away as they are no use to your school but may be useful to another. This school could then make what is called a donation to your schools fund through whatever means as this would be a charitable cause and not deemed VAT payable.

    Unless your school does pay the VAT then all is well if you get prior permission from the LA and your HT in writing to go down the E-Bay road.

    If you sell things either via ebay or any other method your finance dept would provide an invoice including vat and the school then pays that vat back HMRC.

    Simple.

    Not quite true schools do pay vat they just claim it back and if any goods are sold whatever amount you sell them for you include vat.

    So sell a toner for £10 inc vat, the school gets £8.33 and the vat is £1.67.
