    EduGeek Conference May 2011

This is a preliminary notice that it is planned that we are to hold the conf on the Thursday of the May half term break (if someone could confirm the date for me that would be handy!). We are no longer holding this at the Woodlands Centre in Chorly due to the huge problems we always encounter with internet access there. Instead we are to hold it here:

At the Univercity of Central Lancashire's Westleigh Conference Centre just outside of Preston: University of Central Lancashire - Westleigh Conference Centre

It's a mere 5 mins from the hotel and means we don't have to hire a coach (unless you want one that is?).

    Google Maps

We aim to have places for 100 of you as well as space for sponsors and vendors to have displays for you to peruse during the breaks, but please don't email me yet asking for a place, I'll organise this after the Reading conf. As usual, it's free for our members working within schools and there will be a charge of around £20 for members who work for private companies (a bargain really). We have no confirmed speakers as of yet, but we have several interested parties/companies, and as those of you who have attended in the past can attest, we always get good and interesting companies/individuals to speak. If there are any subjects you want covering then it may be the time to request them.

Something about the IT requirements of becoming an academy would be good I think! There's an ever increasing number of us being faced with this prospect, and there's a massive amount to think about.

Yes, that would be good, although now I'm delving a bit deeper it's not as bad as it first appears. A lot of the problems that earlier Academies faced have now been overcome, so don't read too much into the horror stories you hear. Main expense is the MIS license (amazing how every other bit of software we use the license is transferred free of charge!) and any services the LEA will no longer be providing like internet access.
