The Pendrive is Mightier than the Sword

I could write a guide to getting the best from the ubiquitous pen drive, pointing out some of the pluses and pitfalls. Encryption, virus vulnerability, mobile apps, etc.

An excellent idea. Go for it.

OK, Paul Trotter, the PC Advisor editor, has just dropped me a line from Lisbon (the lucky git is at a meeting all week there. Apparently the weather is 'nice' )
He tells me that the deadline for our articles is the 15th Nov, so if everyone who is working on one can post the title of it here for me to let him know I'll need it by COP tomorrow (Thursday 23rd Oct). Many thanks.

Are we paraniod about data? aka Hi, I'm Data
And I'm a Data Controller ... erm ... Information Asset Owner ... erm ... SIRO!

FITS - How do we measure ROI in schools (happy for this to be picked up by someone else ... perhaps someone who)
I can't do anything BSF but I do think an information alert for teachers would be good using the stuff that has come out of Bristol (see NAACE presentations previously posted)

I should be able to get one on network design sorted too from someone (VLANs, QoS, etc). I'll confirm later.

Hmm I would like to do a quick introduction to Linux?

Perhaps taking in the virtues (and ptifalls) of Edubuntu?

    That seem worthwhile?

Ok I'll go with Edubuntu: Freedom from shelling out on licences?

    Pun intended.

    Suggestions

I don't have time to do anything, but some of the popular topics i get regularly asked are:

Using mobile devices for effective communications

Blackberry, PDA, Smartphone, Netbook etc The amount of times I get told schools SMT's have bought the latest and greatest and now are wondering what to use them for.

    e-Saftey

What is is, why is it important, etc. The difference between filtering and monitoring systems and when each should be used. Complieing with the DPA and FoI requests, and how to use monitoring without seeming to invade a users privacy. My favourite: Why you shouldn't use gmail/yahoo/hotmail/blah for your schools email service. (unless you like the idea of a 1/2 mil fine and possible jail term.)

(Sounds like its partially covered under data security)

Making best use of Video Conferencing systems

I actually wrote a mini-website about this a while back, see this page for what I mean. Video Conferencing, Some suggestions for use

    Smartboards

Promeathean for example, have some superb software for primary schools, but very few seem to use it to its full ability. In particular its use in teaching special needs pupils. (fun to use, tactile and interactive)

    Student Response Systems

Probably been done already, but handy for a quick quiz or to find out which pupils need help without embarrassing the kids in front of class.

And of course you could write an entire paper on how to make best use of a learning platform/vle/mle. (or a small library)

Sorry its a little late, but maybe useful to someone.

    J

Is there any idea of article length? I could spout on for pages and pages...or produce some thing concise?
