Default New Site Feature: EduGeek.net Chat! It lives!

We have finally launched stage 1 of the Jabber chat system we have been working on for ages now. You should consider it a beta as we are not truly sure how the load will be with users yet but there is only one way to find out.

Jabber allows you to join common chat rooms and also has the benefit of a huge array of clients available that you can try connecting with (including mobile phones). Also with jabber you can add friends and have proper IM conversations with people you know on EduGeek and you can even use VoIP to talk to them.

When you are connected to the server you will have a icon in your status icons on the forums.

I have created a basic guide to setting up our Jabber client of choice Spark but you can use any other client you want. Spark is Windows 2000+,Mac OSX and Linux compatible as it’s java based.

Currently we do not have a web based interface for the server yet due to a bug in the server which should be fixed soon.

NEW: Now there are flash guides for both Pidgin,Pandion and Spark below.

To get started with EduGeek chat and get the server details goto:
http://www.edugeek.net/?pageid=chat
Or click "Chat" at the top.

BLOCKED?
Try http://www.edugeek.net/?pageid=cht instead.

PROBLEMS CONNECTING?
Try another client such as Pidgin or Pandion as Spark can have issues with proxies.

Good luck

Thanks ZH, I can get into the alternative link. Won't have time to do anything about it until the back end of next week... but I will get round to it!

Groups are the same as the Social Groups on the forums. So if your in one, your in the other.

Also if no one is online you probably wont see the groups. In Spark click "contacts"->"show emtpy groups" and you may need to log off to get the updated groups list. When you login it downloads the groups but it does not display them the first time. Its a issue with spark.

I'm in the Midland Techies Social group, but don't appear in the group in spark.
I'm assuming you can see yourself in the list
