Hi again guys, im still asking questions about recommended parts for a new gaming set up
am i better with a Intel i5 2500K or an AMD Bulldozer FX-6100? does the 6core of the bulldozer make a difference? they are both multiplier unlocked so can be overclocked well but any one with insight or experience of either one or both is very welcome

Gaming - don't get a Bulldozer setup. I like AMD stuff, and for myself I buy AMD CPUs. I wouldn't recommend to others though, especially at this price point - they're competitive at the budget end but not mid/high end here. The 2500K, with an AMD 6850 or Nvidia GTX 560Ti would make a great machine (with an SSD boot drive and plenty of RAM). The actual GPU you get depends on your preferred gaming resolution - those I mentioned will cope with full HD well enough.
If i go AMD am i better with a Phenom II then? are they as good as the i5?
Not a chance, sadly :( fact is that Intel lead AMD by a country mile at the moment. i5 2500k is more or less the processor to get at the moment, nothing else makes sense.Quote:

The Phenom II 1100T (top model) generally outperforms Bulldozer in gaming though, especially in performance/£. At this price point, you're into i5 territory.
Much of this is fairly moot though - most modern games are very heavily GPU dependent. Getting the right GPU is more important overall for gaming.
Fair enough, im just looking at it budget wise, but i suppose in the long run an i5 is a better investment...might ask for some components as Xmas presents hehe
Don't get AMD, Intel 2500k is still the best bang / buck CPU out there as it stands (until the new Sandy Bridge stuff comes out anyway)
I can confirm that 2500k \ 560Ti \ SSD is a very good combo :D
so im thinking this looks like a good deal eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace, this combined with a GeForce 560Ti and the OCZ Vertex 60gb (as they are now only around £55) and a 750watt PSU...take me to around £450quid...what do you guys think?
edit: ive already got a Arctic Freezer 14 from my old system for cooling aswell
Personally - Crucial M4 64GB (they're doing pretty well with the new firmware!) with a SATA 6Gbps supporting motherboard. My issue with that bundle is putting an overclock friendly, beastie CPU like the 2500K into a budget board based on H61. Full ATX would help - H67, P67 upwards would be better (but costlier, obviously). Fast RAM is cheap now so that's a bonus.
Just to check, what resolution is your monitor?
Monitor is 1280x1024 at the moment but im also looking at buying a full HD widescreen in the not too distant future aswell...i was thinking of buying the bundle with the cheaper board and then when i do need to push the processor more and i can afford it better upgrading the board to one of the ASUS P67 boards
ok so now im looking at this setup, as it works out at around the same price as before
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K
MoBo: Asus P8P67 (with b3 revision)
RAM: Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2x4GB)
GFX: Asus GeForce GTX 560
Does that look good as a future proofed setup?
Pretty good - the GTX560 is a slightly hobbled 560Ti but not massively. Close to a 6870 in many things - in fact for the price the 560 and 6870 are very close and you should make your own judgement based on the games you'll play.
Put the bit of extra for the Ti, much better performance over the standard 560
I've got a personal vendetta against Asus after their awful build quality a few years back so would go for this board, again very good performance for the price...

well i've only really ever had Nvidia, and never had a problem...but not really had an experiance of ATI cards, except low end Xseries stuff at work
im willing to change though if the performance is worth it
@gshaw i was looking at that board as it was same price point, i currently run an Asus P5N-E and really like it, but i know MSIs are really good aswell as we use them at school and they are real workhorses
