Youtube (and simliar) access for teachers
More and more teachers want to use online videos for teaching support but as a default youtube etc are blocked (certainly here in Lancs)
in the half-term I set up a teacher friend's latop with real player which has a very easy to use youtube download tool. She downloaded a load of videos for a theme week ,put them on a mem stick and I set up the hall laptop with real player as well to play them back.
All good but required a fair bit of forward planning.
But we can now take control of most of our filtering and me and and the ict-coords came up with a cunning plan :)
Take most of the filtering off the admin network (only head and school sec on it ) and setup a laptop in the suite and provide the admin network to it instead of curric and then all the teachers can just logon to it and do their downloading and log-off (will set a short screen timeout just in case they don't :) )
So going to try and set this up next week.
When I was talking to the tech at my wife's school, he said they just used a 3G dongle at another school when they needed to do that sort of thing so that's another approach (obvious theoretical security issues/contravening geneva convention etc with this approach but in practice should be OK :) )
