Advice needed on strange noise in my car?

Well, it's my missus car really. ;)

She has a 2001 Renault Clio 1.1L petrol and recently, when you go over 20mph, there is a really loud high pitched "screeching" noise coming from the rear right of the car. the faster you go, the louder and higher the sound is. I thought it may be the exhaust but it's on the left.

Having an almost zero knowledge of cars and the mechanical gubbins inside them, I'm unsure what could be causing the noise. My friend said it could be a dud ball bearing? Does anyone else have any ideas what could be up with it?

Edit: I am booking it in the local garage to be looked at ASAP, but would like to have a general idea of what the cause could be. :)

If the brakes are fitted with "Squealers" then it may be a warning that the brakes are running low

If that's the case, they must be well and truly gone as you almost have to shout at each other while in the car! :P

Would they always sequel if cursing down the motorway at a steady 70 or only when you apply the break? ?

By the sounds of it (geddit?? LOL!) It could well be the bearings going.

Had that happen on an escort, about 20years ago, and when I got it to the garage, the whole wheel assembly was hanging off!

But as Mcshammer says, could be brake pads too

wheel bearing is a possibility I reckon.

Are they costly to fix?

They can be very expensive, cos the whole wheel mount will have to come off....

The most expensive thing will be the labour.

Hope it IS just the pads....

Had a wheel bearing go in my citroen and wife's skoda, sounds like a really loud vibrating noise that gets louder the faster you go, almost like a washing machine on full spin! Wouldn't say its a squealing noise, squeals are usually brakes but shouldn't be squealing while you drive.

If it is a bearing, parts cost peanuts but as said above its the labour that racks up the price.

Wheel Bearings I'd go for from that info, the parts are cheap enough its the labour it will be 2 or 3 hours work I'd guess.

should be looking at the £80-100 mark for a wheel bearing supplied and fitted

Congratulations to you all who said bearings! I dropped it off to my local garage this morning, and he jacked it up, spun the tyre and said "Yep, it's the bearings."

It will be ready this afternoon. :)

I had a whiney noise coming from my car all the way back from Great Yarmouth yesterday. It wasn't there when I drove to work this morning, so I could only summize it was my wife.

I was driving home last night when I was stopped by the Police....

They said, "Do you realise your wife fell out the car, 5 miles back?"

I said "Good heavens, I thought I'd gone deaf!"
