Well today we found out that 76 redundancies will be made at our college which has just merged to make the 3rd biggest college in the uk!
IT are likely to take big hit I've heard today!
Funny thing is we dont have the infrastructure even in place yet, let alone a single domain but some of us will be taking the chop already think some of the big chiefs dont know what IT does in the college! small old story!
Rant over............. Will let you all know tomorrow how it goes as there been announced in which sector and who is going tomorrow.....
back to watching football and my vodka!
Chin up mate, thoughts with you!
Best of luck. Our school has just asked staff to volunteer for a shortened working week. If that does not save enough money there will be more measures annouced after Easter.
where abouts in leeds are you? Its not park lane is it?
Our school has asked all teachers to consider voluntary redundancy. I guess they have been asked first because they need more notice. I expect non-teaching staff will be told at the beginning of the summer holidays!
Good luck with the job hunt RichB; hopefully it won't be you though... I feel for you :( It's very unsettling, no matter what happens
Good luck finding a new job Rich.
I am looking myself. We were told in a meeting last week the school needs to find £240k. so we are having redundancies, working weeks cut from 52 to 41 and pay reduced 11%.
Now we have 1 techie per 400 computers and only have 10 days in the holidays to get stuff done.
Good luck mate.
I jumped ship when the college I worked at merged with two other colleges, it was obvious they'd start rationalizing the various depts. The whole thing gave me the creeps, the new 'Executive' Principal had tidy 120k salary and the website now displays a list of management team members as long as your arm - 32 in all! Their whole wage bill must be in excess of 1.5 million before they even start... I don't see any savings? All the managers from the three colleges just seem to have new job titles!
I'm at a school now so frying pans and fire come to mind.
You have my sympathies, my son is in a similar position, his employer is part way through the consultation process. This morning the employees discovered they have not been paid :(
The day the redundancies were announced the multi-millionaire company owners were at Cheltenham, enjoying the racing....
Second 188 (redundancy) notice at this place, 1st bout last year got rid of one of the IT Technicians (we are a specialist IT and Maths school, go figure). This year they are making more people redundant and employing another assistant head (to sort the 6th form out, as they are a complete shambles). I often wonder where Manglement get their ideas from (back of a cornflakes packet springs to mind). I am looking for other work myself but everywhere seems to be in the same boat (apart from BSF which gets far too much money thrown at it IMHO).
It's looking likely that there will be redundancies in this place, too. I'm pretty confident that my position is safe (I'm the only IT tech here, and there's already too much work) but there simply aren't enough children coming in this September.
Staff have been told to inform the head as soon as possible if they're considering retirement/vol. redundancy/job sharing/reduced hours.
Sorry to hear that RichB. I'm in the same boat myself I am the ONLY technician in a Secondary school, 500+ comps in 12 IT suites, 80+ whiteboards, 60+ teachers laptops + anything else that has a plug on it. So I know how you feel, but the powers that be see fit to make me redundant in July. Even though we are working towards BSF, and was told it was a direct result of going into it, (at least 2 years away yet though!) so no chance of TUPE. I'll leave the school with IT Director/Network Manager to do the lot!!! Hope he has a spare hole for the brush ;) cos you're gunna need it mate (& I know you'll read this... :p)

Time to get brushing up that CV, and looking to jump before you are pushed.
If you are lucky, you may find a job just as they offer tidy packages for voluntary redundancy.
On a side note, we were all asked for for cost saving suggestions. Hmmm, what to suggest???
Thanks for the support!
Yes it is Park Lane College or Leeds City College as its now known...
out of the 76 there are 2 IT techs going and one helpdesk! (currently 2 prem 1 temp, and 12 techs 2 perm)
Will be getting a letter in next week or so to say whos in the lime-light! There offering early redundancy and reduced hours first though to we'll see if anyone takes this up....
what I do want to know though is surley they have to get rid of the IT tech temp before any of us? he has a temp contract with us until August 20th!?
If they are on a temp contract to that date I suspect they won't be counted in the figures that are needed to be shed as the contract they are on will finish on that date.
