I walked into the office on Tuesday (after being out on training on Monday) and found a note on my desk...
"Message from ICT Solutions, BT are doing something with external servers and we will be without internet access Thursday morning for 4 hours. The did not give a specific time."
I swear at ICT Solutions/BT and get on with my day.
So, today comes and at 10 O'Clock I get a call from reception, "there's a guy here to do something with our servers". WTF! I haven't called anyone in about servers, everythings running far too smoothly!
Turns out it was a BT engineer and he was here to upgrade out Internet connection to County Hall.
4 hours became 1 hour, external servers/our servers became the fibre connection between us and county. 10mb Internet has become 100mb.
Better still we are the first school in Norfolk (according to the BT engineer) to be upgraded to 100mb link :D
Made this NM's Xmas!
Can you actually download larger files at 10MB/s? Try microsoft.com, a good place to start :)
The Sophos/Bluecoat/whatever security system employed by County kicks in whenever you download a file. You have to wait for their servers to download the file and scan it before you can download it from their servers. So this doesn't really do much to download speed - still waiting county to scan the files first!
On the plus side BBC's home page load up noticeably quicker!
