One of our ex-teacher's son is starting at college and needs Office 2003. His new laptop has Office 2007 installed but needs activating. If he paid to have 2007 activated could he then install and use 2003 instead? This seems to be the cheapest solution.
As far as I'm aware, the OEM and retail versions provided with laptops/by activation don't include downgrade rights. So no, this wouldn't be allowed.
You'd need to locate a legit 2003 license.
try openoffice its open source software which is pretty much replica of office 2003 and its free!
Open office sucks though :P Can't he just use office 2007, unless he is on an office course i really can not see any reason why he should not just use 2007.
Just use office 2007 and if he needs to send anything to other people, "save as" office 2003, simple!

Don't get a full retail thingy of 2007, use the Media-less License Kit (MLK) usually available at a discount from the laptop manufacturer. HP's for example are much cheaper through MLK.
No it won't. Once you pay for it, it activates and you have a full version. Sure, the new versions of Office and Vista call home occasionally to confirm authorisation, but this shouldn't be a problem so long as you have an internet connection of some form.Quote:

His problem is that the course involves ICT skills and they teach using 2003, so that's what he wants on his laptop. I've found the MS Student package at around £70 but it doesn't include Publisher which is part of the module.

It would surprise me if they didn't have one of the work-at-home agreements, where he gets a copy for the duration of his course. It's worth enquiring, sometimes they don't shout about it much.
