Fire proof server room?

I’ve just been asked an interesting question by our site manager:
Do I think our office/server room should have additional fire safety/precaution type stuff aside from our CO2 extinguisher?
I said that as I wasn’t a fire officer I didn’t know.

But it got me thinking though, I always assumed that if there was a fire – everything would burn to ashes, we’d take our backups (stored in another location) buy some new servers with the insurance and start over.
What could they really put in? sprinklers wouldn’t really help the equipment, and CO2 pumped into the room would freeze us and/or suffocate us.

Does anyone else have fancy fire safety/precaution equipment in their server room?

Halon. Just make sure you can get out without breathing. :eek:

Or how about a bunker in the school grounds, like the ones they used to sell during the Cuban missile crisis.

Yep Halon dump gets my vote. Especially for practical joke purposes. :)

Our server room is protected by an Argonite suppression system which I have been assured won't kill us if we're trapped in there when it goes off.

I'm really not inclined to test that theory though!

The old cleaner's cupboard that houses the 5 servers/14 VM servers has a black fire extinguisher. I would have to use my jacket as a fire blanket if that failed to work. I am hopeful that the thick layer of dust would stop a fire from spreading. We do have face masks though, so we don't inhale the dust!

We have an extra smoke alarm in the server room attached to the main fire alarm. We also have the main water main running through the room so if all else fails we could release that.

Fire proof? our server room isn't waterproof!

any kind of gas surpression system i would imagine would be too expensive to retrofit.....in light of that, backup to tape or to seperate building and have insurance for you're server room kit. Failing that, keep a spare of everything - gives new meaning to the term 'mirroring';)......

We have a fire proof wall around our room, and a fire door. No emergency lighting, no fire detector, no fire extinguisher...

And I don't think the fire officer in today noticed.

200 cubed metres of solid concrete, should seal it off quite well from the rest of the world at the least. Works for nuclear meltdowns anyway!
