There was a post not so long ago regarding the number of technicians the Science department has, for example, and the number of classrooms/teachers they had to manage, in contrast to IT techies who basically have to manage the whole school. If anyone could point me to it I'd be grateful.

I'm trying to argue that case as well at the moment.
Science have 4 techs for 8 labs (1:2), Textiles has one tech for two rooms and about 30 sewing machines (1:2) but I have only one tech for 500 odd PCs, 7 full PC suites and all the other crap (at about 50 rooms + offices that equals 1:35 ish). Add to this the fact that they're looking at moving my current tech sideways and replacing him with a part time one and it looks like doom is on it's way.
Are the BECTA recommendations enforceable in any way or can they just pick the bits they want to use as so often seems to be the case?

Here science has one tech for two labs; he is full time and as he used to be a teacher I have noticed that he is often to be found doing the teaching as well!
And then there's me: 10 hours a week for 103 curriculum machines,22 teacher laptops and 17 whiteboards.
Beggars belief really
At our school we currently have 3 science tech's (2 part-time and 1 full time) to support the science dept & science teachers. We the IT dept have myself (IT Network Manager) and 1 senior IT Tech for the whole school, we look after over 500 clients pc's/laptops, 13 servers, wireless, telephone system, the IP CCTV, the technical side of the VLE, etc - kinda sounds like a joke. It seems like us that work in IT are "second class citizens", if you're not directly linked to an academic dept it's "try again next year". If you're linked to an academic dept, well you get the idea...

very frustrating indeed very hard to get people to take ICT serious here. just a techie but drives me mad.
Heh, schools don't take ICT Staffing seriously. Here I'm being moved off to something else (as HBJB said above) and being replaced by a part timer (HAH!).
I will likely be too busy to help HBJB any more, plus I'll probably have my hands so full i'll need more staff myself! They should really be hiring in another two fulltime techs :O
