Don't forget that this is the QUANGO that appointed an outfit that has no experience with open source to set up and manage open source schools projects. (Becta schools deal stuns British open-istas ? The Register)
I agree in general with what Tamarside has said. They may well have good intentions - but the political meddling and the way in which things are done leaves a lot to be desired.

It seems that after Becta awarded the £270k contract, they then asked the community to take over - for free !#
It seems all this company did was set up a friggin drupal site ! FFS.
Almost exactly 3yrs on from my original post, I now see the problems with BECTA - well intentioned, but over bureaucratic and lacking any teeth.
