I was listening to a program on Radio 4 last night where they interviewed a professor who is an expert on Mayan culture. He said that the latest thinking from the academics is that the actual date is December 24th, not today. He didn't think the world would end, it was just a new calendar cycle would start.
So if we're still here on Christmas morning, the world didn't end!
The Jeane Dixon effect.
It's strange how this prediction is so specific, despite the craziness of the predicted event. It tends to invite face-seeking eggs. I suspect that a routine Mayan calender event has been built up into something it's not. A bit like saying the year 2000 would bring some vague cataclysm or other. It's just an arbitrary calendar event.
Most predictions only work after the event. Postdictions? The nonsense around Nostradamus for example. Follows maintain that somehow his predictions fit perfectly when you look back before the current time. Well, many vague things can be made to fit. Oddly enough though, they tend to be a bit vague and wooly when considering future events.
<obligatory tangent>
Of course, if you're also a subscriber to the theory of b-time (block universe), then you'll know the world has already ended (and also not yet been formed). Just try not to look surprised.

But I digest.
Grats and all.
Last kiss I got from a member of staff was when she'd dragged me to dance at the Christmas bash and I stood there with my best 'not amused' face until the song ended.
I can't dance.
Ah well, I'm sure the bottle of JD I just received from the ICT Manager will help me through my despair :D
Whoops - I'm in deep doggy do - just ate a cake that was left in the staffroom - apparently it was someone's prize.....!
:-(
Hmmm, Quarter past 1 and I'm still waiting - these chestnuts aren't gonna roast themselves...
I wonder what date they'll announce next, then. *sigh*
EDIT: *double-sigh* Oh, so it's the 24th now? Ha! I will personally end the world myself (GOLDENEYE!) if all I'm going to hear every single bloody day is "It's today, oh wait no it's today, oh wait no. Definitely today now!" -_-
All I can say is it was a good thing I decided to do the job interview rather than go out on a rape and pillage spree. (And I'm sure the interviewee thinks the same since we offered him the job.)
Who knows, maybe the calendar was their version of an Christmas Advent Calendar ;)
Minus the chocolate.
