Dreadful weather here. Blizzards and settling. Went into a meeting at 3 with weather OKish, came out at 5 and crawled home on ungritted snow covered roads. Tonbridge hasn't been gritted at all despite the forecast. The snow is settling on the main roads and there is no grit to help with grip. It's taken over 45 minutes to do a ten minute journey.
Snow is only on grass here. Lots of little flakes in the very very bitter wind. It is freezing and my poor daughter has just had to stand in a very cold Southampton station waiting room for an hour and a half due to one train being late and missing the connection, and the next train being half an hour late.
The temperature is around 1 degree but the wind-chill factor must be very high as it seems colder than at any other time this winter.
Many years ago I was waiting at Southampton for the last down train of the night; about 01:30. It was hissing down, freezing and blowing a hoolie. As a train pulled in, a deep, rich voiced Jamaican accented anouncer said "Southampton, welcome to sunny Southampton"*. Made the wait worthwhile.
*Shame you can't do accents in text!
Had quite a covering last night up here in Northern Lincolnshire, more flurries this morning and then come 9am accidents galore, there have been some 40 reported accidents during the day. 3 along the stretch of the M180, suspect the strong winds have had something to play in it.
Snow has now disappeared, bits left but nothing like earlier just the bitterly winds. Been a long and cold day here, be glad to see the snow gone.
We havw had a covering today. Its about 2 inches deep. And still coming down. My road is a nightmare. Normally it's gritted but today it hasn't been done.
I just don't get the lack of gritting! I know we live darn sarf, but this snow was forecast.
It must be Essex's turn for the gritter if it's not in Sussex or Kent :(
my 30 min drive home approaching 2 hours
Husband has just done the A21 (Major dual carriageway) in first gear. M25 a nightmare of course. 40 minute journey = 2.5 hours :(
I did see the gritter in Kent yesterday evening. Granted it was sat in the (very long) queue to get through the Dartford Tunnel on the M25 (hour and a quarter to get from J3 to the tunnel). Then saw another one later on (much later on by then) up the A12 on the Essex /Suffolk border. Which does seem to suggest that there are two grifters in the South-east!
Photos or it isn't true! ;)
