what's your home system(s) and what do they do....

So what do you run at home...



1) ESXi server on quad core old desktop with 8gb Ram.
a) XP test VM
b) My old Suse Server now virtualised
c) VortexBox Media Server for Music (Super!!!!)
d) Test XP box
e) Test Linux Box

2) Old Acer X2 AMD, Old ubuntu Desktop

3) Old acer X2 AMD . Runing Myth TV for PVR Recording (This is GR8!)


4) Old Dell D520 laptop. My laptop running Ubuntu

5) Old Dell D505 Laptop. Wifes ubuntu Laptop.

6) Old Dell D505 laptop. Eldest son (8) XP laptop.

7) I also have a windows laptop for the rare ocasion I need to read car diagnostics..

All routed on a Cisco 877W router..


Mythtv has been through 4 HW builds

the first was a massive desktop case running an old P4.. Noisy but did the job

Then had a super nice little Acer Veriton, but that died
then a Dell SX280... But that died..
The Acer T180 has run for 18 months now. Standard pedastal but it does a good job.. Mainly recording Kids TV!

5 yr old laptop is my test machine it uses our school test system via vpn.

Why spend anything on home test equipment if you have powerful machines at work?
Better still would be to get work to buy into some server time in the cloud!

Other than that just a myth box,telephone and desktop.

1) Custom built PC - Gaming and web browsing, occasionally used for work but rarely!
2) Dell Inspiron D6400 laptop - super-upgraded ancient laptop, for web browsing and work.
3) Currently at work but mine, an 11 year old Dell built solely to run NFS III and 4. Which it does rather nicely :D
4) Bunch of games consoles, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS. All get used, as HD graphics don't bother me.

Very little geeky stuff at home really, it stopped being a hobby and just became my job (which I still love!).

Family toshiba laptop.
Old desktop pc for electronic stuff in man cave with colour laser printer.
2 Wii's

All-in-one PC that acts as the TV.
Tranquil PC used as a server for virtual machines (email server, Windows test server, Windows remote access desktop, file server, source code repository, development server). Old HP NX6325 laptop (upgraded over the years) running Windows 7, use it for general web browsing and IRC etc.

Nothing fancy :)

Last thing I want to see at home is a computer / server / switch / tablet / BB / Android phone / laptop / printer blah blah blah blah..............

2009 c2d 24"iMac with 8gb ram, 120gb hd in SuperDrive slot & 1tb hdd upgraded from the original 640gb

Microserver with 8gb ram, 120gb ssd and some hard drives of various sizes. Runs esxi 5.1 and is used to run a backup server which is on 24/7 and other test vm's which I use as and when

Sons (8) xp laptop

Netbook with 2 gb ram and 64gb ssd used for reading and studying

iPad 1 16gb wifi which daughters use (3 & 20 months)

Sons (8) iPad mini

8gb iPod touch

2 x Apple TV 3's

Xbox / wii

God, when I write it all down its clear I have an addiction

I forgot the iMac... Kids use it to go on Cbeebies website ( when Safari is not crashing )..

and the Original XBOX Crystal.

Couple of laptops, one low power Atom Window 7 'server' that is on all the time for remote access to home, media storage and downloading.

I have team viewer client on the virtual XP machine. So I can access my systems from anywhere on a PC/Tablet...

Need to get a physical cable from the Mythbox back to the router though as I cant's WOL it in order to set new recordings when it's off either have to wait for it to power on for a scheduled recording or go and press the button.

Old dell optiplex 755 desktop from work, a seagate go flex networkd hdd which I store all my media on as it's dlna compatible and works Nicely with my recently purchased Samsung box which plays the media over the network on my tv in the lounge. I use my work iPad and work laptop at home for anything else I need.

I have got a couple of old laptops I use for parties for playing music etc. but they spend most of their life in a box.

I did go through a phase where I had all sorts of stuff wired up at home just for testing and messing around with, but those days are long gone. Not only does it take up too much room, but if your running just a few machines 24/7 it adds a lot onto your electric bill!

Does my Crystal Set count ?

Same here. I used to have server-this, NT-that, Smoothwall, Win2K box, XP box as soon as it came out, wife's pc, kids' pc's, personal domains and all that good stuff. I ethernet-cabled the whole house almost in 2000.

Just don't have the same interest anymore. Well, I do, really, but when I go home, I leave it behind at work these days.

Just have a dual-core Intel, 4g of ram for home use, and I take my work laptop back and fore for everything else.

The electric bill is very much a factor too.

Soon to be windows 8 Phone

All linked with one live account, and using skydrive for backup. Wonderful stuff.
