In a discussion with a friend (a Data Centre Manager) about how different school servers can be from school to school we hit on trying to see what a typical server room looked like, and whilst he enjoyed looking at the server room thread he wanted more quantifiable information ... so to settle a disagreement would folk care to answer the following?
- What type of school are you? (S - Secondary including Upper schools, P - Primary, M - Middle, J - Junior, I - Infants, N - Nursery, O - Other and please add SP if special provision or ALT for Alternative education such as PRU)
- How many learners do you have?
- Approx dimensions of your server room
- Is your server used for any other task (e.g. office, storage, etc)?
- Was your servers room a conversion (eg no - dedicated room, yes - previously a toilet)?
- How many Racks do you have?
- What make(s)?
- Dimensions (eg 19" x 42Ux 1200)
- How is your rack filled (e.g. 4U - UPS, 10U - servers, 5U - switches / routers, 4U - patch panels, 3U - Cable Management, 16U - spare / blank)
- How much power is available and drawn per rack (individual rack)?
- What is the BTU output of the equipment in your rack (individual rack)?
- What is the weight of your loaded rack?
- What is the max cooling load of your A/C (BTU/hr)
If you don't know any of the answers then just say "Don't know" ...

With respect to (10)
The design and install were poor.
Insufficient outlets were specified , loadings not checked, etc. We battled to have it sorted but got nowhere. We are still neeedding to rectify this.
As an example (and this is on our other site which came second!) they specified too few cabinets for the server room despite us asking them to provide rack diagrams to ensure the space.
So after primary install they agree that there needs to be another rack to house equipment sitting on the floor. And it would need a UPS, and as such would need power.
My colleauge "Z" rings me up. we will call the installer "X"
Z: "Hi Rob, X have had a look in the ceeling and say there is a feed already there, so they can put in the extra UPS no problem"
Me: "Realy? A Spare 32A? Bonus.."
Z: "No, it's a 16A but X assure me it's fine"
Me: "But the UPS is an APC RT6000 right?"
Z: "Er, yeah... X say it's fine"
Me: "But 6000VA will overload the Supply"
Z: "Will it, they say that's how the other one is connected"
Me: Spits and rants.
Me: "Ask them to look on the back panel of the ups next to the incommer, look at the Rated supply. It's not 16A!!!!!"
Me: "So they need to fix that one too!"
With Respect to (11)
Total heat output was calculated by "X" based on thermal output from device's . Obviously that is MAX output. Their calcs came in at under 7.5Kw
So we run two 7.5kws for N+1
"X" put the structured cabinet on teh end of the run of cabinets. So there is a mass of cabling all running one way.
Basicaly if we had planned it, then It would ahve been done a whole heap better.
After last weeks fiasco I've got the Business Manager to agree to getting the wiring in our server room sorted. The UPS holding up the main switch and routers in Rack1 died. So I risked my life for the sake of the school and climbed behind the racks to re-wire direct into the mains. Now...

I have no idea where the mains is coming from. We have 1 thick cable from a fused spur labled "servers" feeding the other rack. However in Rack 1 we do have 3 5-gang extension cables plugged into each other. Until the UPS failed and I rewired what I could, there where Y-splitter coming off of those and in once a Y-splitter off a Y-splitter, plugged in to a 5-gang extension, plugged in to a 5-gang extension.
I thank the last NM for the mess that is Rack1 (both electric cabling and data cabling - mess!!!). Although I have, er, ignored the problem for the best part of four years (if it ain't broke for $dietys sake DONT TOUCH IT). I have a major re-wireing effort planned next summer. If the school hasn't burn't down before then...
