@GrumbleDook: quite a few replies have indicated in reply 12 that the loaded rack is HEAVY [my reply included] and @twin--turbo mentioned a consideration not included in your post: server Room location: Ground floor or first floor?

Our Server Room is located on the first floor and although our loaded rack is heavy it is not a 'threat' to the floor. This may not be true for all schools?

[Our Finance Department has a safe that certainly could not be located on our upper floors]

I'm not so much worried about which floor the server room is in for this survey ... that question was mainly to give examples weights so that the consideration of threat to raised floors ... not that many schools have raised floors in their server rooms.

Should have also said there was a second "backup room" which consisted of 2 x 42U racks - on with patch and switching in, the second with 8u of servers storing onsite backup (1 x 4U 36bay 32TB backup server 1 x HP DL380, 1 x HP MSA60).

For clarity we do not have a raised floor [false floor] in our sever room.

Going back to the dark ages of mainframes... weight of equipment was rarely a threat to the raised floor. There was too much cable underneath holding it up. We rarely reused cabling as kit changed. It was left in place and new cables laid under the floor where we could find room! :rolleyes:

Interesting survey. There seem to be a number of similarities (as well as differences) between schools. For instance, Toner storage. Are we all under the mis-guided believe that the Air Con is somehow beneficial to the powder ;).

A couple of other questions do naturally flow from this if we were to compare IT structure between schools.

> How many use the server room as an office? (I did at my last school for about a year until teachers were booted out the office opposite).
> How many NM's share an office with other IT staff, or do you have your own? (I've just got my very own office for the first time this year! :D)
> How far away from the server room is your office? (Previously I was in the next room, techs still are. I'm now half a corridor away but was nearly moved to the other side of the school)
> Do you have a secondary/back up server room? (We have a wall mount cabinet with a 2U NAS box in a remote cupboard)

Mine does. Oh, I've completely change the servers, added storage, virtualisation, etc. But the actual racks, switches, electrics, cabling, room, etc, all pre-date me and might even pre-date my predecessor!

Just for completeness, my server room is also on the first floor and the cabinets are both free standing (UPS's along make them unmovable), they are not secured to the walls, floor, ceiling in any way as far as I know,

Lol, no. Its actually pretty detrimental, as when the A/C unit breaks down and leaks all over the boxes it isn't good. Its just a space thing for me. :)

Would not want my own office. We work as a team, we discuss issues during work flow. Having to go to another office would be detreimental to day to day operation and development.
