Car & Oil usage...
I'm after some friendly Edugeeker advice as I'm (unfortunately) not mechanically in any way at all. Hopefully someone here will have answer. I drive a 2009 Peugeot 308 1.6 VTI petrol. I've owned it for just over a year and I'm not sure how fast my car should get through oil but I've had to top my oil tank up twice since buying it. Both times were because the dash warned me the oil was low (and indeed it was almost empty). Before my 308, I owned a 206 2.0 HDI diesel for almost 6 years and I did not have to top up the oil this often! As far as I can see, there appears to be no sigh of an oil leak (ie - a big oil patch in my car parking space!) so am wondering if this is normal consumption for a car this type, and if not, why it would be getting through so much?
There are a few bugs with the 308 but I've not heard of excessive oil consumption.
One of my technicians tell me that this is likely to be a problem with one or more of your piston rings. It could be that oil is being forced through the the seal that is formed by the ring on compression [Is there more smoke that normal coming from your engine when you run it?]
If you take your car to a garage they will be able to pressure test each of the cylinders in turn.
Either piston rings or a severe leak somewhere......
Piston rings are usually diagnosed by characteristic blue smoke from the exhaust; thick, choking, horrible smelling stuff.
I'm guessing [hoping] you'd have noticed a leak of that volume. :)
Another quick check you could try is take spark pugs out [disconnect them one by one] and check them for oil deposits. You would normally expect to see just a deposit of soot. If you do see oil that is a stronger indication of a problem with the seal[s]
Important note: The leads that go to the spark plugs need to go back to the same location they came from.
Very interesting, thank you! Still strikes me as odd though as there is no smoke at all coming out of my exhaust, and no bad smelling fumes from the exhaust/engine either. And there is no trace of an oil leak that I can see. I have my own parking space and it's always parked there and there is no sigh of any oil, not even a modicum!

Odd indeed. As Dave said give the plugs a quick check, if there's nowt there either then I'm befuddled.... Unless someone is stealing your oil ......
No white gunge (mayo) under the oil filler cap is there? Has it ever boiled over either? Radiator or cooling system needed work? Any oily film in the radiator reservoir?
Just check those while you're at it. :)
Yeah you'd notice SOME symptoms of that much oil going.
You don't say how many miles you've done in that time - if you have done a lot of miles (12k plus) it is possible. There are so many variables in this such as oil capacity, point at which you are warned (how much do you put in each time) and the oil consumption rate of the engine. To give you an example my Audi 80 1.8 used virtually no oil between changes but my Skoda 1.9 TDi caught me out twice by needing a top up within the service interval.
how many miles do you do,
howdo you drive
is the vti turbocharged?
What is the oil capacity
Thanks for the suggestions guys. :)
Miles? - Roughly 10-12k per year average?
I'm not a forceful driver, and don't have boy racer-esque tendencies to pull away from lights as quick as possible! :) If I'm on the motorway, I'll let the cruise control go the work for me and keep it at a steady 75/80?
No turbocharge. Just a standard 1.6l VTi engine (made by BMW apparently).
Not a clue on oil capacity but I'd say I've used a half to 2/3rds of a bottle of GTX Maganetch oil refilling it.
I filled it up to full about 3/4 weeks ago. I'll check the levels later on and report back.
