How much you doing this holiday?

So, it is the time of year where we pull out the mops and gaffa tape and patch things up.

The question is, how much do you have planned this holiday?

Here is my work load/the things being done over the holiday involving me:

Refurb main computer room, including 34 new computers
Refurb secondary computer room, including 10 new computers
Create third computer room, including 34 new computers
Get rid of existing 3rd computer room (rip out cabling)
Have multiple new fibre's installed in various places to replace substandard cat5 links and wireless links
Implement a new phone system using asterisk and heartbeat
Refurbish our administration office (complete recable)
Move my office down into the admin office
Refurbish bits of 2 class rooms to make a couple of computer clusters (12 new machines)
A new proximity card access system is being installed, which I will have to set up for use
Produce ID cards/proximity cards for all staff
Reorganise server cabinet so I can lock it and also fit the new kit in.
Have a smartboard installed in our art room
    Various other bits and pieces
Reimage all computers in school to ensure they have all the software they need on
Do some work on all staff laptops to remove copyright infringing software and ensure they are up to date and secure
Move all my bits and pieces stored around the school into my new store cupboard.

    I've probably missed something...

But that lot is all going on in the holidays with my having a week off in the middle.

    Ok where should i Start

12 core fibre from server room to cabinet to accomadate new apples
Install 18 machines into new library. All over cat5 and store rackmount PC's in our data centre
rip out office and install more data electrical points, put in shelving and worktop for new work area. To accomadate new technician starting in September.
setup new SAN Bloc and migrate data from old server to this server
Get backup server up and running again
Install AV equipment, smartboards and Pixie pro controllers in various classrooms for room changes
Install all new software on machines and then send images out to all the IT rooms and create a few packages
Tidy up our IT technical area on the school web site with more pictures hopefully
Move cabinet from floor to wall and reroute cables.

plus managing all these projects and ensuring all deliveries arrive and chase up those damn suppliers

Re: How much you doing this holiday?

    • Install RM CC3 SR6
    • Re-structuring software package allocations to machines, streamlining shortcut menus etc
    • Rebuild all workstations (and backing up half a dozen outlook user profiles.. stupid outlook)
    • Upgrade memory and harddrives in 60 machines
    • Document and diagram the network - switches, ports, rooms etc in the IT wiki
    • Create howtos and flash video tutorials to build up the user wiki
    • Implement new IT helpdesk
    • Install a new IT suite (5th) of 30 machines and 2 printers
    • Install wireless in the sports hall and add more network outlets for new tablet PCs (also to be built onto the network)
    • Coordinate ~12 Promethean IWB installs
    • Continual testing of Moodle/Eduspaces, Zimbra, and Terminal Services
    • SIMS updates (SQL server)

Looking forward to October when we have to move the servers! 8O

We are rebuilding our entire domain. The people (who shall remain nameless) who originally built the domain, used a single label domain name!

Installed admt v3, to help migrate all the users from the old domain to the new domain. This has been a great tool, and almost reminds of the good things that MSN do Tool even migrates the users password We are redesigning the groups so will be scripting copying the file permissions to keep security as we want it on group/users.

In theory we could have renamed the domain, but have been looking for an excuse to rebuild the network from scratch

Also changing our network kit from Cisco to 3Com.

Setting up 47 new laptops for staff.

Above is on top of our daily duties, so going to busy

Re: How much you doing this holiday?

In comparison to most of you not a lot, but...

Create two new ICT Suites with 20 new pcs and 1 printer in each.

Upgrade two existing ICT Suites with new dells (20 in each)

Push 10 of the older pcs into our SEN Centre

Have the remainder attached to smartboards

Have drop down screen and projector in Assembly Hall and Gym

    Have Digital Signage installed

Get 30 Laptops repaired (mainly keyboard replacements)

Replace our four year old servers with spanking new ones

Add a NAS into the equation

    Upgrade Firewall to latest ISA

Completly revamp our website (looking tired now)

And then its the usual sims, bromcom end of year molarky!!

I am hoping to get the projector in hall mid Aug so my colleague and I
can properly test it out!!!!!!!!! :-)

Not too bad for us this year, we'll be:

    Setting up 60 new laptops
Installing new 3Com WX1200 based wlan in one block
Migrating user data to new server
Upgrading email system and moving it to a new server
Rebuilding Squid server (its not happy)

All for the getting drunk suggestion too Richard

Oh, I missed something - implement video conferencing in our school and 3 of our feeder schools, including replacing old switches with new managed ones, sorting out cabling, and installing 42" plasma screens and the VC units.

Going to Tenerife tomorrow -and after that - officially nothing but in fact I am getting 21 machines off a fellow Edugeeker which are twice as fast as ours - so I need to collect them and sort them out with XP
Which doesn't sound like much but I am not supposed to do anything at all in the holidays.

Re: How much you doing this holiday?

Not as much as last year..

Figure out how to deploy Office 2007 via GPO!! 8O :?
Create fresh build with up-to-date software
Rebuild WSUS, Intranet & Exchange Servers
Get RM to rebuild SuckAssMaker Server
Strip out all network patch cables and tidy them up!!
Create Yr7 users and move exisiting users up a year.
Clear out File Server & shift software Repository onto new 2TB NAS
    Update GPO's as needed.

Probably a few other jobs will crop up but thats the main gists of things..
