    Re: How much you doing this holiday?

    I'm off a lot these holidays, 4 weeks in total (1 family week for moving house and 3 for annual leave.) Only leaves me 3 weeks really.

    In that time I'm:

    refurbishing 4 suites (software/hardware.)

    Changing all the settings on the wireless in the school to make it more secure and configuring all of the wireless computers that I can get to at the moment.

    testing my printer script works for auto creating printers depending on the computers containing OU (seems to work fine but I want to make sure)

    updating the schools 3 inter/intra net sites.

    Installing 11 new PCs that I've been putting off for the past month.

    installing 2 new network printers (a doddle now I have that script working!!)

    Reorganising the server room, taking the lot out of the room so I can put it back into the room in a far more sensible arrangement!

    Messing about with a lot of projectors, some not working, all needing cleaned and one IWB with seems to be knackered.

    I've already done a lot of that work already though, only a week and a half into the holidays

    Re: How much you doing this holiday?

    Well, I've got is easy this summer, especially in comparison to some of you!

    * I've got about 10 rebuilds/new PCs to do
    * Co-ordinate installation of 3x projectors and 2x 680i SMART boards (the funky new height adjustable ones)
    * Co-ordinate installation of network points in our "new" Sixth Form block
    * SR5 and SR6 installations
    * SIMS update if I'm feeling brave (probably one for October half term though)
    * update (i.e. write!) disaster recovery policy
    * general holiday tasks like cleaning PCs, tidying office, etc
    * familiarise myself with Vista and Office 2007 to see if there's any benefits in installing either of these.
    * take 4 weeks holiday :-)

    Re: How much you doing this holiday?

    Over the summer we are getting two new server and rebuilding our whole domain.

    setup MS server 2003 on 4 servers
    create new ris image for pc
    reimage all 400 pc's
    create software packages for new and old software
    test software on network
    install 30 new projectors around school
    reimage 60 laptops
    figure out how to set the wireless up around school, we have 17 access points but they have never actually worked properly

    biggest pain will be the staff who want to take there laptops home over summer as the network is being rebuilt, when they come back they wont be able to connect and the offline file system wont work for them, so who knows what might go wrong there.

    somewhere between all of this take holidays.

    Tom

    Re: How much you doing this holiday?

    We have a long list of to do's aswell;

    Rip out old benching from Careers room, disconnect old cast iron radiators, box old pipework in, paint, carpet, first fix electric, install new benching, second fix electric and data.

    Install new cab into Pupil Support to accomodate the 40 cables from Careers.

    Run clusters of cables from un-networked classrooms

    Swap and change switches around

    Install 3 Projector and Screens ( 1 with a full sound system)

    Rejig the machines around the school, in the usual sort of cycle. New PCs into IT Rooms, Older PCs to other Depts.

    Impliment Room Bookings and Helpdesk

    And of course..the documentation which the NM has been trying to do for the last 5 years with no luck (you should see his filing cabinet)

    Install new Sims Server, because the old one was sat on a blue screen the other day (not good at all)

    All between me the Techy and the NM becuase we are the only 2 IT Support Staff

    Re: How much you doing this holiday?

    going to greece from the 18th to the 26th ............ then all hell breaks loose

    we're practicly redoing the entire network

    one room is being chucked away (all the pcs being given to a charity), we have to move all the pcs from the one next door to that across the other side of the school

    we have to build around 200 pcs for the new building and image them

    put 8 servers in place as DCs with a different subnet for each section of the school, replace all our old decrepid switchs with nice fancy HP procurves (where we havent already)

    all sorts of recabling to be done in the server room, everything on the eonstor needs to be moved off to a temporary location so we can format the disks and clean it up a bit, put everything back on defrag it (reason bein we think theres a problem with one or two of the drives but all this can be done whilst we're doing other jobs) although we might leave it all on there and just run a few programs to check the disks because we could cause all sorts of problems come to think of it

    all the old pcs out of 2 rooms that are being replaced have to be spread out throughout the school (they want a minimum of 1pc per classroom by september........somehow they think we're going to spring an extra pair of arms or something)

    then in the unlikely event we have some time left at the end i want to try and replace one or two of the old dell servers with a spare HP one we have currently doing not much at all

    EDIT: oh and we also need to a proper form of disaster recovery sorted
    EDIT again: and get helpdesk working again which i acidently onpurpose nuked a few months ago
    EDIT again again: and theres limiting home drive space for students, getting all the students an email address with limited space and finally (at least i hope) get print manager sorted again for printer credits

    EDIT yet again: also a few projectors/whiteboards that need putting up and setting up

    obviously with the amount we've got to do we've already started, got a test subnet setup to make sure the extra DCs do what there supposed to, got connects to come and put some copper and fibre in where needed, biggest problem we've got is we cant get into the new building until the middle of august, which means everything else has to be done and ready to be put in once the building opens otherwise we're goign to run out of time
