    Some insects for you :)

Seeing as it was a nice weekend we went to a place called Gait Barrow, a Limestone pavement yesterday. It's a nature conservation area and had some unique flora and fauna. Anyway, here are a few pics I took, hope you enjoy them

    Some insects for you :)-magpie-moth.jpg

A Magpie Moth (actually I cheated, this was on my washing on the line at home, not at Gait Barrow) - These are quite common. Just hard to see!

    Some insects for you :)-scotch-argos.jpg

A Brown Argus - Quite rare in the north and restricted to only a few sites in the up here. In Fact, this is about as for north as it gets.

    Some insects for you :)-wood-ants.jpg

Wood Ants - Very uncommon in the north, but there were a LOT of them here. An interesting fact is that they can shoot formic acid several feet and are the source of the phrase 'P*ss ant' - Thanks Wikipedia!

    Some insects for you :)-ringlet.jpg

Ringlet - Not common at all in the North West of England

    Some insects for you :)-grayling.jpg

Grayling - These are really hard to see once they are on the ground as they fold their wings and lean over to look like stones! These are very restricted to certain coastal sites throughout the UK.

Have a look at this thread:

It has a couple of insect related links you might like.

It's a great spot! Did Rob show you round? Did you see the Orchid? The whole area ...... Silverdale in particular is worth exploring ..... but watch out for the tides if you venture onto the coastal areas!

We only live in Preston, so it's not far at all. I should point out that Wood Ants are very (VERY) hard to photograph as they are extremely fast and aggressive. You really don't want them getting on your legs!
A run up Warton Crag is in order next I think.
Oh, and if you are ever in the area, go for fish and chips at Arnside and eat them by the estuary. Beautiful.
