I have heard this one as a reason the cadbury's chocolate you get in Kenya tastes different - apparently it's made with milk powder rather than milk, and this helps somehow. It's bad, but nowhere near US bad.

That's exactly what it tastes of - sick. There's a pukey smell to Hershey I just can't get over

Having bought a chocolate wand as we left Harry Potter World in Florida last July, and being left with a Chocolate Puddle by the time we got to the car, I can believe this.

Reese's Pieces are nice, but the rest of American confectionary can DIAF. After a week or so you start to crave cereal where the primary ingredient isn't sugar, as well; Fruit Loops are fun the first couple of mornings but it's not long before you just want some Weetabix instead.

Never noticed the smell - for me it is the gritty texture that grates

I made my first trip to the US last year, walked into the hersheys store on Times Square and was imediately hit by the horrible pukey smell you guys are talking about. I still bought and ate 2 1kg bars lol.

As for the heat being a reason, they do the same thing in Australia and their Cadburys doesnt taste like ours but, its still 10x better than hersheys.

Maybe there's something in the heat issue, actually, as the nicest chocolate I've ever had was Norwegian...

There are some companies that make proper chocolate in America, but they tend to be smaller and independent operations. e.g. Dandelion Chocolate in San Francisco.

ACK Hersheys chocolate tastes like bile. You know when you've vomited up everything that was in your stomach and are now vomiting acid? That is what hersheys tastes like. It's vile.

I bought some Cadburys in India that was like wax.

My favourite is Lindt Excellence Extra Creamy.

True enough. I thought the Americans would have nailed chocolate, but eating Hersheys is like eating earth.

This thread brought back a memory, when my mate came back from america on his hols about 4 years ago, he brought with him a load of these disgusting things too for a bit of a laugh on his part, he said that they smelt like sick when handing them out to us which none of us believed until we opened them up, they were not even nice chocolate to eat when you can get past the smell, peanut butter M+Ms were nice though which we cant get over here without going through a mail order company of some sorts.

Looking at Wikipedia, its not even suprising their chocolate bars are disgusting :-

In September 2008, MSNBC reported that several Hershey chocolate products were reformulated to replace cocoa butter with vegetable oil as an emulsifier. According to the company, this change was made to reduce the costs of producing the products instead of raising their prices or decreasing the sizes. Some consumers complained that the taste was different, but the company stated that in the company-sponsored blind taste tests, approximately half of consumers preferred the new versions. As the new versions no longer met the Food and Drug Administration's official definition of "milk chocolate", the changed items were relabeled from stating they were "milk chocolate" and "made with chocolate" to "chocolate candy" and "chocolaty."[12]

I bought a Hershey Bar when they came out in Asda, I remembered them from the Empire of the Sun film.

Needless to say it was the last time I bought one, and I don't know why Cristian Bale was so eager to get hold of one in the film.

    Yuk.
