as stated earlier in the thread I find it amusing that a bar will have 18 year old deciding who look over 21 and who doesn't. I once got turned away from the The Cross in London because in the words of the door staff "The old bloke with the beard wouldn't like it in here anyway....."

I once had a stand up arguement with a checkout lady - I was buying a bottle of whiskey for a friends birthday. I had my girlfriend with me at the time, She said to me "Does she have ID?" I was like er no, im buying it. She said "She needs ID because you could be buying it for her" I said but its me thats buying it, Do I look over 25? but she wouldnt have it! I can understand in a way but annoying because I went specially for that! Was not impressed at the time.

TBH the requirements annoy me. driving licence/passport are all well and good... If you have them.

I don't drive and have no passport. And there's no chance I'm taking my birth certificate.

If the government want to do this sort of thing, they should provide ID to everyone. WITHOUT charge.
I agree - I LOVE the idea of a national Identity card scheme, I'm less keen on the paying for it - I thought we already paid for it in our excessive tax and NI payments!

That being said, I also love the idea of Microchipping everyone at birth... lol

Having read Richard Morgan's Takashi Kovacs series the idea of having data uplinks hardwired into the body is pretty awesome. But then I'm a bit weird like that.

Jersey Shore type people are already getting chipped.

It's a credit card chip doodah, but it's a short step from that to ID chips.

These chips should also have a shock collar type thing in them, which electrocutes them when they say or do something dumb...

I think it'd fail pretty quickly due to being on too much.

I agree...there should be another option of ID
But if I didnt drive I'd probably just relent and get a provisional licence purely for ID, it's just too much hassle not having any, for me anyway

This is fairly standard now...quite annoying. If my girlfriend doesnt have her purse on her when I'm buying alcohol, we have an agreed system where she slopes off and waits at the exit for me while I pay. Which proves how stupid it is...if you were buying for someone underage, you wouldn't actually go to the checkout with them!

    I would. Double-bluff.

They think you're buying for the underage person, but as they're with you at the checkout you obviously aren't... But you totally are.

Just take a tramp in with you and tell them it is for him (like in Southpark)

This is such a stupid rule. If I (aged 48) am out shopping with my children (aged 16 & 18) and buy some booze, nobody ever queries whether the alcohol is for me or them. For all they know, I'm buying it for the under-age teenager, not me... they'll assume that's my daughter, but that's another story!

However, if my teenagers were with someone nearer their own age who was buying alcohol, they'd have to provide ID.

    Stupid jobsworth rule!

I remember a few years ago, was 29 at the time, the wife and I were doing our weekly shop - quite literally a shop full. We had three bottles of wine. Both of us were asked for ID. Only I had it. She nearly refused to put it through - we were allowed this once!

It's about common sense surely?! Firstly, would I be with someone who was younger than 18? My wife doesn't look under 18. And we are doing our weekly shop!! Hardly going to sit in a park.
