Question second hand car + road tax??

So im looking at buying my first car within the next week or so I have my eye on a nice 1.6 astra for £500 with insurance being quoted at £1,200. The car has a valid MOT but no tax, both me and my mum have been looking around the internet for an answer.

How do i tax a car that i just bought? Most have said take the new owners part of the v5, mot cert, and insurance cert to the Post Office and tax it there but I will probably being buying it in the evening once the post offices have shut... So how would i go around taxing it so i can drive it home?

    Cheers for any help

I think you might have to arrange for the seller to put the tax on as he will have the documentation to do it and you give him the money, or else you will have to buy it when you can tax it. Post offices are open Saturday mornings.

Pretty much what @witch said. Easiest is to get the current owner to do it.

If the car is taxed it will show up in the DVLA database as such - Your allowed to not display a tax disc for a few days (given that most people now do it over the internet). You would have to go and collect it from the current owner when it does arrive.

Are you sure - I thought the offence was not displaying a valid tax disc - not not having one in the post

If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

This month, due to the bank holidays, they have extended that exemption to the 12th.

Current owner would be best BUT and it is a big BUT if you have JUST bought the car as long as you do tax it in 24 hours you should be fine, if you get pulled explain the situation BUT also be aware that you NEED to also insure the car the moment you buy it,. as new laws state a car cannot be on the road if it has not got insurance in it's own right meaning that if the car isnt insured by someone even someone with fully comp allowed to drive any car STILL CANNOT legally drive it on the road so be wary of that.

SO I wouldn't advise you drive it home unless you get the insurance first ... all you need to do is ring the insurance company and get cover there and then pay by credit card and viola! You'll be on the system as insured.

    FYI

If you get tax over the internet, you MUST display a tax disk, your old one is fine until the new one arrives.

It isn't an offence to not have an 'up to date' tax disk in the window if you have bought it online and your just waiting.

It is an offence if you buy it online and take your old one out before receiving a new one.
