Re: New Edugeek Users - Introduce yourself here :)

Another Bett Recruitee, would have posted this at some point yesterday whilst things were fresh in my head but I made the mistake of meeting up with a friend for a 'creative brainstorming' session. 7 pints and 3 packs of crisps later I wandered home. So yeah.... intro.

Work for a College in Surrey, started as a Senior Technician in 2003, was 'promoted' in 2004. Since then I've tried to drag our system to as high an operating point as possible with the help of an ever circulating duo of technicians (Indeed the current Snr, who is due to assume another position at the college, was my predecessor to the job). The Network has around a dozen servers of varying spec and build, 1000+ workstations of varying makes and models, usually whatever we can get reliably for the least amount of money. There's also a mac subset comprising of one Mac Quad G5 server with a 2.5TB Raid Array hanging off it, and 60 odd macs that are used in the performing and visual arts fields.

    Through all this I've survived.

My personal self in a data burst: Married, Rocker, Hippie, Internet DJ, Nerd, Geek, Advocate of Real Cider, perpetually trying to break into a creative media field.

    Hello

Maybe you should have a look at your post and remove any possible words that might lead to legal action

A fair point, assuming you were referring to the fate of the previous manager. Other than that I don't see anything else that might land me in legal trouble, trouble with the wife on the other hand (I arrived back from London rather late)...

Re: New Edugeek Users - Introduce yourself here :)

    Hello everyone,
You could say I'm another Bett Recruit as I visited the show on Friday and after a short chat with I think GrumbleDook decided to join only to realise after trying to register that I already had an account registered back in 2005. It must have been one of those register and then totally forgotten about moments because I'd totally forgotten about EduGeek.net and that at some point I’d taken the time to register.

Anyway, My name is Simon I'm the network manager at Shirebrook School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and also the owner of a certification community forum www.certforums.co.uk thats dedicated to giving help and advice to anyone studying or thinking of studying for any of the main professional IT certifications such as A+ Network+, MCSA, MCSE and many others.

I’m guessing that’s the reason I’d forgotten about EduGeek as running a community website takes plenty of time and energy as the guys that run this place will know first hand.

So now I’ve found EduGeek again I’ll try and remember to keep popping in and taking part in this great community you have here and also try and make some kind of contribution. Keep up the good work I’ve done plenty of reading over the past hour and picked up some good advice on the way.

    Catch you again soon, SiFor.

Yes, but I bet you're better qualified! I see what you mean about the similar job, though. I was so pleased to find another primary techie who recognised my job description that I did a bit of digging in other postings and yes, I've been through the projector lamps and getting info from SIMS (well, Integris in our case) bit as well! And the trying to sort out a new computer suite, despite not being really at the correct level of management for it. And....I could go on and on!

The worst part of the job is actually the isolation of being a one-woman-band. Maybe Edugeek might save my crumbling sanity.

May be able to help with this one in the not-too-distant future!!!

    That'll be me then - three teenagers: 14 (f), !6 (m) and 18 (m)

they wake me up when they come in -if of course they come in at all!
Seem to prefer other people's floors to the home comforts!
Can start up a general topic on teenagers and how to cope if you like!

And another one here too. Part of what dragged me into DJ'ing, and what keeps me sane on those days when *everything* goes wrong...

    Hey Simon,

Small virtual world hey? Hows things my friend?

I love Pink Floyd and have done since I was about 15 or 16, I managed to get to see them play at Live8 with all the band members and I've seen Dave Gilmour live a couple of times and I was at the Hyde Park Calling gig last summer with Roger Waters and Nick Mason playing. They did a few of the old classics for the first hour then came back and performing Pink Floyd’s legendary ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ in full. That was amazing!!!

    <Jealous>

I'm only 18 so completely missed the boat with the PF stuff...if only i'd been born about 30 years sooner......I'd be a lot older.
