Welcome Altair, I have perfected a response now for schools which I am called in to visit and seeing Windows 98 still installed. It involves a sharp intake of breath and slowly raising my arm in a pointing gesture whilst generating a horrified shudder whilst simultaneously generating a wail of 'NoooooOOOOO'. The typical response is 'Is there something wrong?'. At least it gets their attention.

Hi - only just spotted this forum so my apologies for not doing so sooner.

IT Manager in a big school (1800ish) in Birmingham.

Happy in my job, well paid, good supportive SMT and staff (with a few expections!). Leading a good team of five very talented individuals and between us we look after the 150 LFT's, 500 or so curriculum machines, AV equipment (every classroom has at least a projector) and large, site-wide wireless network.

Mmm nice. If it wasn't for the word Birgmingham I would've offered my services

I have a habit of posting essays instead of quick responses so I shall apologise and stop there.

You should have seen the dust bunny that was living in there. The CD drive was clogged, the blades on all the fans were coated, and the PCB boards were all brown. I thought it best to just let it die in peace.

For the rest, all I can say is I am very glad I got RIS working. It is nice to be able to just boot a floppy, select which setup I want, and then walk away. Half an hour later the OS and applications are installed, updated, and ready for use.

Hi Folks!

I'm just stopping by to say hello. I am new here and pretty excited to see a website dedicated to Educational IT professionals.

I currently administrate a school in Ohio that consists roughly 3000 kids. We have some pretty amazing technology here and are always improving it as we can.

I am primarily a Cisco Switch geek and have been using Microsoft Active directory in large environments for the past 3 years. So hopefully I will be able to contribute well to this board and please feel free to ask me any questions.

Hi Mark,

We have two people on staff including myself. That does seem to be alot but we have it split between Windows(7 - 12) and Mac(1-6), I handle the windows side and just supervise the Mac side of the network. Since this is so big, we have everything in the windows portion running active directory and the mac side has its own LDAP service.

I try and keep everything managed by group policy so we can keep down any managment hiccups and most pieces of software just install the second you log into the network. That helps

Taking a step away from hands on ICT (I was a deputy head and "information systems manager" until a week last Thursday) to the dizzy heights of headship seems an odd time to be join edugeek, but I have every intention of keeping in touch with the ed-tech world, and am keen to give ICT a far higher profile at my new school.

Apart from the whole school leadership thing, professional interests include knowledge management in education, use of open source software and approaches in schools, provision for the gifted and talented and independent learning.

I'm a member of the British Computer Society's Education and Training Expert Panel, and its e-learning working party. I'm also a Mirandanet fellow and have a watching brief on primary matters for the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Schools and Further Education committee. In my former post as deputy head of St Ives School, Haslemere, we pioneered the use of Moodle and Elgg in primary education. My work on implementing Moodle was documented as the dissertation for Leicester University's MBA in Educational Management, and won the 2006 Becta ICT in Practice Award for primary teaching.

Other interests include classical music, creative cookery and photography: most of my digital photos are on Flickr, many of which
are geotagged. For those who are interested, there's a blog over on Elgg, and my profile page there has links to recent publications and presentations.

Welcome to EduGeek mberry and congratulations on your promotion, although it must have been hard to drag yourself away from St Ives, a beautiful part of the country.

As a Head of School together with your previous experience I'm sure your input will be a useful addition to some of the questions and comments made here.

I've just taken up photography again now digital cameras mean reduced costs and time so your Flickr site was of interest. I've also taken up hillwalking so like to combine the two activities. I have some pics posted here (btw the rest of the site is just me experimenting with web sites)
