    Twitter - Hashtags

Thought I might as well start trying to "tweet" a bit more using my Blog account (I don't have a personal account due to the events of last year...)

Just wondering how these hashtags work?

I've been adding one to the end of each tweet, but it doesn't appear to be showing up any of my tweets when I search for it/

Twitter account is in my sig along with my blog and I'm trying to use the hashtag of #GattsRamblings...

I think it won't show your tweets if they're protected.

None of mine show up either.

On the subject of hashtags... can someone explain the to me.

I know what they are, but I got asked to explain them last night and was at a loss. [Didn't help that I was playing a game at the same time and was a little bit drunk...]

Tweets aren't protected and are public...
As for what they are - I think they are a fancy form of keywords...

Don't they go at the start of the item you are tweeting about i.e. #BBC then what you want to say about it?

Doesn't help... The person who asked is [mumble mumble mumble] years old and non-technical.

No, They appear to be valid everywhere - been googling trying to figure out why mine don't work and they can be anywhere in the tweet so long as its a new word and start with a "#" (eg you cant use edu#geek.. but you can do "#edugeek is great" or "#edugeek is the best #forum for #IT in #education"

It could be a case of the account being partially banned.

Also, have you checked the twitter hashtag support page? [Didn't read; Is blocked.]

Lol, I don't hash spam! I try to keep to a max of 3 or 4 tags at a time - anyway it eats into your 140 char limit!

I tend to only put one per tweet, normally #F1 or #SkySportsF1

    Yeah... That kind of sucks.

I need to get a smartphone... I only have Twitter on my laptop, which I forget about.

I mean... How am I supposed to tell people about the funny looking dog I saw on the way to work, when I have to wait until I get home hours afterwards?

For sure, with a smartphone you could take a picture, geotag it, upload it to a generic social media site so we all know where that comedy dog can be found to the nearest metre!

Exactly! That's how it should be done

    I know, right.

Never again will I have to describe "the hot girl on the bus" on my way home purely from memory.

Hashtags are just a way to track content on a topic across a range people.

Take the The Only Way Is Essex, for example. You might follow and be followed by a great group of people, but if you wanted to find out what other people (i.e. everyone else on Twitter) were saying about the show you could search for tweets tagged #towie, and likewise take part in that conversation by tagging your tweets #towie, too. #ukedchat is another, perhaps more relevant, example.

That way you don't have to follow every single person who tweets about that topic, but you could set up a search column in your favourite Twitter software to show tweets that have that tag in them.

Tagging all of your own tweets with #gattsramblings isn't going to really benefit you because people who want to see what you're saying as an individual would just follow you or list you anyway.
