    Screen Capture to avi

    I want to capture the screen (preferably set the capture area but not essential) when I press a key and have each image saved.

    The I'd like the same piece of software to convert the images into an avi (pref with choice of compressor but can live with uncompressed or wmv)

    IF it can't do that, then at least save them into a folder so I can use another prog to convert the images to avi.

    This is to use Google Sketchup for a 3D stop animation.

    I just can't seem to find a (free) prog to do it.

    Any ideas please?

    Will Cam Studio Do this? If not you can actually use onenote to save screen grabs which could be made into a video

    Gadwin PrintScreen Free Edition Screen Capture and Print Screen software and then just dump the files into Moviemaker to create the animation.

    Ta
    Gadwin is a basic version of what I want as I want to control when a frame is captured (Wink does it as well but doesn't save to avi - just swf )

    Wonder is there is something one step up from Gadwin?

    If you already have your images, ffmpeg can convert them into almost any video format you need. Just download the latest static build from here, copy ffmpeg.exe to the same folder as your images and use the batch file below to convert them into a video.

    The commands depend on the format your images are in, the filename sequence (in this case, img_0000.jpg, img_0001.jpg, etc.) and the codec for the AVI.

    Code:
    @echo off
    cd /d "%~dp0"
    ffmpeg.exe -y -r 1 -i "img_%%04d.jpg" -threads 0 -an -c:v rawvideo -pix_fmt uyvy422 output.avi
    If you want an MP4 instead of an AVI you would use this...

    Code:
    ffmpeg.exe -y -r 1 -i "img_%%04d.jpg" -threads 0 -an -c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -preset veryslow -crf 0 output.mp4

    @sysman - Actually once I set Gadwin to client window capture and tried your drag and drop the images to the timeline then it seems to be just the job

    Camtasia allows you to select windows or a screen area but it isn't free.

    @Arthur
    I'm wanting to do this with a class of primary pupils

    But maybe a little autoscript GUI around it might be suitable.

    Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Screen Capture. it will cature in WMV but looks great and it is free. You can also embed the video into silverlight as well. You can record audio from the PC and overlay your voice realtime or later. You can also add a watermark to the capture.

    EDIT: there is a 10 minute capture limit on the free version but this is fine for most clips.

    There's a bit of freeware called jpeg2avi (or something similar) which is used for compiling a folder a jpegs into a timelapse video that might do the latter bit of the project.

    My first attempt
    LegoBridge.wmv - YouTube

    Just imported a bridge and a lego man from the Google 3D warehouse, used Gladwin to capture the screen and then just dropped all the images into Windows Movie maker
