    Sorry to hijack but what about laptop batteries, I know they are consumable but what happens when they stop making them for a maximum 5 year old laptop?

    Sale of goods act is a bit vague on availability of parts

    The law states the responsibility lies with the retailer, not the manufacturer.

    Also, availability of items is not covered in the law - but by extension, if the retailer can't repair your broken item, then the onus is on them to compensate you accordingly.

    One thing to remember in all of this is that many consumer protection laws do not apply to purchases made by business/organisations, only to personal consumers. I'm pretty sure this is one of them.
