    Yes you can, but the first book is still worth reading as it contains much more detail than the film, which misses out quite a bit from the book.

    @mattx:

    You don't need to read the first book as the characters are the same throughout, what happens in the last 2 books are expansions of these characters and what happens to them.

    I would still purchase all 3 though as you can get them in special trilogy packs (For prosperity) enjoy your reading and the films when they come out.

    Thanks bossman - good to hear from you. I will now have something to read on my trip to NY [ if it goes ahead in a few weeks and if I'm back from Germany in time..... ]

    I've not seen the film and no wish to. I'd say get the lot because it will refresh your memory and as previously mentioned, there's bound to be more detail. I've just finished the second of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy and found them very enjoyable.

    Watch the Swedish ones! The american version changed the bloody ending! It was a different person who ended up being the long lost grand-daughter. Don't believe me then watch them both and compare! The swedish version follows the books, the american one is going off on a different tangent

    Yep, great series. The second one is the best of the three though.

    Read all the books, watch the Swedish movies... pretend they never did an American version... all is right with the world...

    Reading all three books is definitely worth it. The Swedish films are brilliant, especially with just the English subtitles.

    Lisbeth Salander would make a cracking ICT Technician, just keep her away from the DT Room.
