433Mhz Rx/Tx pairs go for < £10 - would do the job for a remote switch panel. Zigbee is two way and more reliable but IMO overkill for many uses.

I am assuming that I would need another arduino/microcontroller on the button side as well? + power source

Would be cool but I may stick with the software as its really to show the kids what you can do with Python etc, also it works a treat
